Being aware of our own biases and being informed are sorely lacking in our society in light of the level of the public discourse on important issues. That's the message Jim Walters brought to The Power of Learning Show during Rochester Today with Andy Brownell on KROC-AM Monday morning.

The Power of Learning Show is all about critical thinking and how using critical thinking can improve our personal lives, our careers and our society. Jim used the hour on the radio to show how bias shapes the way we think and communicate. While it's impossible to rid ourselves of our biases, Walter says being aware of them is the key to elevating the public debate on solving the major problems facing our country.

He notes that debates on important issues are often dominated by people and groups that are only open to presenting and hearing statements that support their own biases, which makes it very difficult to facilitate meaningful debate that can help educate citizens about the issues and lead to compromises that actually resolve problems and disputes.
