Expunging a criminal record and circumstances that require revising a will were among the topics covered by The Legal Eagle Monday morning on KROC-AM.

Attorney David Shulman joined Andy Brownell on Rochester Today for his monthly Legal Eagle program, during which David took calls from listeners with questions about a wide range of legal issues.

The question about expunging a person's criminal record was timely seeing as a new state law went into effect January 1st that is designed to make the process easier. The aptly named Second Chance law gives judges more leeway in considering requests from people convicted of misdemeanors, gross misdemeanors and certain non-violent felonies wishing to have their criminal records sealed.

The legislation passed with bipartisan support after lawmakers heard the story of a Burnsville woman who got into some trouble as a young adult, but straightened her life out and went college. She has a marketing degree and has had several job offers, but they were withdrawn because of her criminal convictions from when she was 18 and 20 years old.
