Rochester homebuilders took out 27 permits for new single family homes last month.

That raised the total for the year to 369. That’s about 40 more than in 2013 and was the highest annual total since the 417 that were approved in 2007. The 2014 total was also nearly twice as high as the 2011 figure, while the homebuilding industry was still recovering from the economic downturn.

There were several large commercial permits approved during December. One was for the new Hy-Vee store project, which was valued at $10 million. Another large one was for the Nicholas apartment project being constructed along West Center Street. It was valued at $7.9 million.

Altogether, the city approved more than 2300 new building permits last year. The valuation total was $398 million.
