Wasioja, MN (KROC-AM News)- A chimney fire is believed to have cost a southeast Minnesota family their home.

That’s according to a news release issued by the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday morning. The homeowner reported waking up to smoke inside of the home around 12:10 Tuesday morning. 

The fire broke out at a home in the 21,000 block of 601st St. in the unincorporated community of Wasioja, which is about five miles north of Dodge Center. Responding deputies reported seeing smoke and flames coming from the home’s roof.

The homeowners were trying to get everyone out when deputies arrived. All of the home's occupants and their four animals escaped the fire, according to the news release.

Fire Departments from Dodge Center, Mantorville and West Concord responded to fight the blaze. They remained on scene until about 4 a.m.

One of the home’s occupants was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported. 

The Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office also responded to the fire to inspect the home and speak with the homeowners.

A preliminary investigation indicates the fire may have started in the home’s chimney or fireplace area. The home is likely to be a total loss, the news release says.
