Truck Crashes Into SE Rochester House
Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Some residents in a southeast Rochester neighborhood had their sleep disrupted early Tuesday when a pickup truck crashed into a house.
It happened around 2:30 a.m. a few blocks east of the Boys and Girls Club.The truck left the roadway and hit the house at 1317 2nd Street SE, pushing the natural gas meter into the basement. The gas service line ruptured and as a precaution, that home and 5 others were evacuated for two hours until it was determined it was safe for the residents to return.
The driver and a passenger fled but were caught a few blocks away. The driver is in custody on suspicion of DUI.
Deputy Fire Chief Steve Belau says there was concern when it was learned some of the leaking natural gas had migrated to the nearby storm sewer system.Belau says that created the danger of an explosion that could have blown off manhole covers. He says once the leaking gas was stopped, the danger subsided.
