The Rochester School Board held a special session Tuesday evening to discuss the school district’s possible participation in a federal grant program designed to expand quality pre-kindergarten programming for children from low-income families.

The Rochester Public School system is among six districts in the state that have been invited to partner with the Minnesota Department of Education in pursuing funding through the federal government’s Race to the Top education reform initiative. The proposal envisions a four year, all-day, every day pre-K program that would be offered at no cost to 316 low income students each year at one school district location, the existing Head Start program and three other partner sites.

The cost of the program has been estimated at about $14-million dollars over the four year period. If the state is awarded the federal grant, and the school board approves, the proposal calls for the new pre-K program to launch next fall.
