Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Plans for a proposed major park for Rochester were given a big boost this week.

The Rochester Parks and Recreation Department was informed its request for a grant to help develop the proposed Gamehaven Sports and Recreation Park was approved.

The Greater Minnesota Parks and Trails Commission approved a $1.1 million grant will be used to acquire about 94 acres of land adjacent to the park. Department Director Paul Widman says the acquisition ” is a major step in moving the master plan forward for the development of the park.”

The proposal calls for an all-season recreational park that would include trails for summer and winter use.

The site is southeast of Rochester on city-owned land adjacent to the city’s flood control reservoir along County Road 1, where the Boy Scouts organization also owns property.

At last report, the Gamehaven proposal had an estimated cost of $14.4 million.
