Rochester Mayor Ardell Brede stopped by the KROC-AM studio Wednesday morning for one of his regular appearances with Tracy McCray and Andy Brownell during the Rochester Today show.

The Mayor always has an abundance of information to share with KROC-AM listeners and his list this time included the creation of a new civilian commission that will have limited oversight of the city's Police Department. The City Council hashed out some of the final details concerning the commission's membership and mission during this week's Committee of the Whole meeting and Brede says City Attorney Terry Adkins is now drafting a proposed ordinance establishing the commission for the Council's consideration.

Mayor Brede noted Rochester officials have been working with the local chapter of the NAACP and the Olmsted County Human Rights Commission on this issue for about a year, starting well before deadly incidents in Ferguson Missouri and New York City sparked nationwide protests.

The new commission, which will include members selected by the NAACP and the Human Rights Commission, will have oversight of Police Department policies and procedures, but not disciplinary actions against officers. That authority will remain with the Police Chief and the Police Department's administration (See the above YouTube post for the Mayor's explanation of the proposed process).
