Rochester,MN  (Rochesterhonkers.com) -- The Rochester Honkers swept a Thursday night doubleheader with the Mankato Moondogs at Mayo Field.

The Honkers claimed the first game  6-2 . Brad Mathiowetz (DMACC), a product of local Mayo High School, hit his first home run of the season, a two run shot during the five-run third inning by the Honkers. Sam Hall (Dixie State) also went yard for the first time in the 2015 Northwoods League season with a solo shot in the fourth.

In the nightcap, the Honkers prevailed 5-2.  Colby Green got the win for the Honkers, while Matt McHugh was charged with the loss for Mankato. Rochester doubled their season total for homeruns on the day, hitting three between the two games.

The Honkers held a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning of the second game before Joe DeRoche-Duffin launched his third home run of the season, and second against the MoonDogs in as many days, to put the Honkers up 5-1. Mankato managed one unearned run against reliever Matt Fiedler (Minnesota) in the sixth, but could not mount the comeback in the seventh, ending the game.

Infielder Scott Schreiber (Nebraska) went 2-3 with an RBI in his Honker debut. Alex Schultz (Nebraska-Omaha) had one run and one RBI in one at-bat.

Rochester travels to St. Cloud for a pair of games Friday and Saturday before coming home on Sunday and Monday for games against the Thunderbay Bordercats.

 

The Honkers will travel to St. Cloud tomorrow for a two game series against the Rox, before coming home on Sunday to play host to the Thunder Bay Border Cats. The first 500 fans will receive a free Slider bobble head courtesy of Wells Fargo and 106.9 KROC. It will also be Kid Club Day, presented by Perkins. Kids will be able to eat free on the Sports Deck and run the bases after the game.
