(Gophersports.com) -- Minnesota's 2016 campaign came to a close on Sunday night in an 8-2 defeat to Texas A&M in the final of the College Station Regional. The Gophers (36-22) rattled off eight hits and held the nation's No. 1 team to just six in the contest.

Austin Athmann was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and two rbi's.

Micah Coffey finished out his sophomore campaign on a 21-game hitting streak and reached base safely in the final 23 games after he smacked a single up the middle in the sixth.

On the mound, Matt Fiedler and Tyler Hanson split 8.1 innings and the duo combined for four strikeouts on the evening. Jordan Jess closed out his career by securing the last two outs, including the final out on a strikeout.

Texas A&M added to its margin by scoring a pair of runs on a sac fly and a ground out, respectively, to make 4-0.

Minnesota got on the board in the bottom of the sixth by way of three hits with two outs. After a line out and a ground out by the opening two batters, Coffey flared a single to center and moved all the way to third on consecutive wild pitches. Then, Athmann fought off a 10-pitch at-bat and laced a double to left field to score Coffey and make it 4-1.

After Vavra slapped a double down the left field line in left in the bottom of the eighth, Athmann singled to make it 5-2 with one inning left to play.

The Aggies notched three more runs in the top of the ninth to put the score line at 8-2.

Toby Hanson and Jordan Smith were selected to the College Station Regional All-Tournament Team for their efforts all weekend.
