Rochester, MN  (KROC AM News) - A former Rochester assistant police chief who was involved in a traffic wreck near Rochester has died.

The Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office says 89-year-old James Ryan was driving his pickup truck on North Broadway a few miles north of Rochester on Friday when the left the road and hit an embankment.

Ryan and his 86-year-old wife Beverly were extricated from the truck and taken to St. Marys Hospital. Ryan sustained serious injuries and died the next day.  It’s not known why he drove off the road.

He retired from the police department in 1988 and had been living in the Wabasha area.
