Even though it just started earlier this summer, Delta is ending one popular direct flight from here in Minnesota to Hawaii.

Hawaii is one of those bucket list destinations, right? And if you're looking to go soak up the sun and fun of the 50th state, getting there was *supposed* to be a lot easier from the Land of 10,000 Lakes. Earlier this summer, the largest airline serving Minnesota (that would be Delta Air Lines, btw) announced it would be adding new non-stop flights to Maui later this year.

But now those direct flights have been discontinued-- even though they only started just three months ago. The Minnesota-based travel site Thrifty Traveler says that direct flights that would fly you non-stop from the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) to Kahului Airport (OGG) has officially been pulled.

Those devasting wildfires that ravaged parts of the island of Maui earlier this year are the reason why those direct flights from the Bold North to the Kahului Airport have been discontinued.

According to Thrifty Traveler, you WILL still be able to get to Maui, but it won't be on a direct flight from Minnesota:

Delta will continue to fly directly to Maui from MSP to its hub airports in Los Angeles (LAX), Salt Lake City (SLC), and Seattle (SEA), and if you're booked on one of the nonstop flights from Atlanta or Minneapolis, it's likely your booking will be rerouted through one of these cities in the coming days.

It's an interesting decision on Delta's part, and is based on soft sales to Maui, Thrifty Traveler noted. It also noted, though, that not ALL of the island Maui was affected by those deadly fires, and that those areas are still in desperate need of the income generated by tourism.

Delta did say, though, that while they'll be discontinuing those direct flights from here in Minnesota and Atlanta through the fall and winter seasons, they are committed to adding them back when demand picks up.
