Burglary Conviction Sends Rochester Man to Prison
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Rochester man was sentenced today for breaking into the home of an ex-girlfriend and assaulting her.
52-year-old Jermaine Johnson Senior was given a sentence of just over eight years in prison for his conviction on two counts of first-degree burglary. An Olmsted County jury also found him guilty of two gross misdemeanor domestic assault charges and a misdemeanor theft charge at the end of the trial in late May. He was acquitted of a third-degree assault charge involving a child and a gross misdemeanor count of interfering with a 911 call.
Court documents indicate Johnson was arrested in August of last year after Rochester police responded to a report of a domestic assault. The officers spoke with a woman who told them that Johnson had choked her and struck their one-year-old son after entering her apartment following an argument over a text message.
The criminal complaint states that Johnson was also accused of taking her phone when she attempted to call 911 and then left her apartment with the cell phone. The court record says Johnson was later pulled over by police and admitted that he had gone to the woman's apartment. He denied assaulting her or their child.
