GOLDEN VALLEY, Ariz. (AP) — Relatives say they were surprised an Arizona couple found dead from exposure in the desert near Lake Mead ventured into harsh conditions so soon after the man underwent cancer treatment.

Sandy Ryan said Wednesday that she didn't think her brother, John, was well enough to go out after receiving chemotherapy and radiation more than two weeks ago.

The Mohave County Medical Examiner confirmed that the two bodies discovered in a van Sunday in Lake Mead National Recreation area are 66-year-old Ronald John Ryan and 65-year-old Nancy Engebretsen.

Autopsies are being conducted to determine the cause of death.

The couple, who also live in Minnesota, was found about 100 miles northwest of their Golden Valley home.

According to family members, they went missing July 27.
