Birds batter Royals

UNDATED (AP) — It was an exciting night at Camden Yards as fans saw four homers, a high-wire act by Ubaldo Jimenez and a benches-clearing brawl.

Mark Trumbo belted his major league-leading 20th home run and Baltimore won for the sixth time in seven games by crushing Kansas City 9-1. Trumbo provided a two-run shot and a two-run double to highlight the Birds' 11-hit attack. Chris Davis, Adam Jones and Ryan Flaherty also homered to back Jimenez, who surrendered nine hits and three walks but just one run over five-plus innings.

The brawl occurred after Royals starter Yordano Ventura hit Manny Machado in the back with a pitch in the bottom of the fifth, three innings after they exchanged words at the end of an at-bat. Both players were ejected.

The defending champs have dropped six in a row since a six-game winning streak put them atop the AL Central. The Royals are just 11-21 on the road.

Elsewhere in the majors:

— Texas picked up its fifth straight win and improved to 8-0 versus the Astros this season with a 4-3 win on Ian Desmond's tiebreaking, two-run homer in the eighth. Reigning AL Cy Young winner Dallas Keuchel fell to 3-8, tying his loss total from his 20-win season in 2015.

— Cleveland had won six in a row until Nelson Cruz homered twice and Shawn O'Malley laced a two-run triple in Seattle's 7-1 win against the Indians. Wade Miley gave up four hits in seven shutout innings as the Mariners stopped a four-game skid and stayed four games behind the AL West-leading Rangers.

— Detroit earned its fifth straight win as Ian Kinsler capped his two-RBI night with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the 10th to complete the Tigers' 3-2 comeback win over Toronto. The Blue Jays led 2-0 until Kinsler and Michael Cabrera hit run-scoring doubles in the ninth.

— The New York Yankees were 6-3 winners over the Angels as Carlos Beltran ripped a two-run homer and Starlin Castro added a solo shot. Michael Pineda gave up three runs over seven innings and combined with two relievers on a five-hitter.

— Jake Eikhoff was sharp in Philadelphia's 3-2 triumph over the Chicago Cubs, striking out eight and holding the major league's top team to a run and two hits in seven innings. Ryan Howard hit a solo homer as the Phillies dropped the Cubs to 40-17.

— Jonathon Niese allowed four hits in seven shutout innings against his ex-team to lead Pittsburgh past the New York Mets 3-1 in Game 1 of a doubleheader. Jordy Mercer hit a solo homer and Josh Harrison was 3-for-5 with two runs scored as the Pirates won for only the second time in their last seven games.

— The Pirates completed a sweep of the twinbill by allowing just four hits in another 3-1 triumph over the Mets. The Pirates have won their last nine meetings against New York since 2014 and trail the NL Central-leading Cubs by 8 ½ games after entering the doubleheader 10 games back.

— Cincinnati coughed up a 6-1 lead before beating St. Louis 7-6 on Joey Votto's walk-off homer in the ninth. Adam Duvall homered for the fourth time in five games, a three-run blast off former Red Mike Leake.

— Derek Norris hit a game-tying homer in the ninth before Wil Myers slapped an RBI single to give the Padres a 4-3 win over Atlanta. The Braves wasted a 3-1 lead and dropped their sixth in a row.

— Trayce Thompson's solo blast with two out in the bottom of the ninth gave the Dodgers a 4-3 victory against Colorado. The Rockies rallied after Justin Turner's three-run homer put Los Angeles ahead 3-0 in the first inning.

— Xander Bogaerts capped his three-RBI night with a two-run single in the 10th inning to lift Boston over the Giants 5-3 in San Francisco. The Red Sox stayed a half-game behind the AL East-leading Orioles and sliced the Giants' lead in the NL West to three games over the Dodgers.

— Anthony Rendon was 3-for-5 with a two-run homer and three RBIs in Washington's 10-5 rout of the White Sox in Chicago. Bryce Harper lined a go-ahead, two-run double and drove in three as the Nationals stretched their lead in the NL East to 3 ½ games over the Mets.

— Zack Greinke tossed a three-hitter and Arizona turned a pair of homers in a 5-0 win over Tampa Bay. Jake Lamb opened the scoring with a three-run blast in the fourth, two innings before Paul Goldschmidt added a two-run shot.

— Milwaukee earned a 5-4 win over Oakland behind Chris Carter's two home runs and five ribbies. Winning pitcher Zach Davies didn't allow a hit until Billy Butler's two-out homer in the seventh.

— Minnesota pulled out a 6-4 victory against Miami on Brian Dozier's two-run blast with two out in the bottom of the 11th. Eduardo Nunez homered twice for the Twins before Robbie Grossman tied it 4-4 with a solo blast in the ninth.

Peralta activated

UNDATED (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have activated infielder Jhonny Peralta off the disabled list and started him at third base in Tuesday's game at Cincinnati.

Peralta had surgery to repair a damaged ligament in his left thumb in March after hitting .275 with 17 homers and 71 RBIs in 155 games last year. The Cardinals optioned second baseman Kolten Wong to Triple-A Memphis on Sunday to open a roster spot.

— The Chicago Cubs placed outfielder Jorge Soler on the 15-day disabled list because of a left hamstring strain and brought up prospect Albert Almora Jr. from Triple-A Iowa. Almora is hitting .318 with a career-high 10 stolen bases in Triple-A this season.

— The banged-up Los Angeles Angels have placed reliever Joe Smith on the 15-day DL with a strained left hamstring. The Angels brought up pitchers Mike Morin and David Huff from Triple-A Salt Lake and designated right-hander Javy Guerra for assignment.

NFL-TWITTER HACKED

NFL Twitter account hacked

NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL is looking into how its Twitter account was hacked and how to strengthen its cyber-security measures.

The league has "engaged law enforcement" after a post appeared purporting that Commissioner Roger Goodell had died. That tweet was soon deleted.

Goodell later jokingly tweeted, "Man, you leave the office for 1 day of golf" with former Bills quarterback Jim Kelly and "your own network kills you off," followed by a hashtag and "harsh."

NFL-49ERS-KAEPERNICK

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Colin Kaepernick was cleared for individual work and took on-field reps for the first time since undergoing multiple offseason surgeries.

The 28-year-old quarterback joined the rest of his 49ers teammates for a two-hour practice and took part in almost every session except for team scrimmages.

Kaepernick was limited the entire offseason following surgeries on his left shoulder, knee and right thumb.

SOCCER-COPA AMERICA

U.S. blanks Costa Rica

CHICAGO (AP) — The United States is 1-1 through two games in Copa America.

Clint Dempsey had a goal and two assists as the Americans thumped Costa Rica 4-0. Jermaine Jones, Bobby Wood and Graham Zusi also scored as the U.S. moved into prime position to grab one of two spots in the knockout round coming out of Group A.

It was a crisp performance by the U.S. following Friday's 2-0 loss to Colombia.

NBA FINALS

Cavs looking for Love

CLEVELAND (AP) — Cleveland Cavaliers forward Kevin Love did not practice with the team Tuesday and his status for Wednesday night's Game 3 of the NBA Finals is up in the air.

Love suffered a concussion in Sunday's Game 2 loss to Golden State and is in the league's concussion protocol. Among the tasks he'll have to pass before being cleared to play are tests of increased physical exertion, such as riding on a stationary bike, then jogging, then agility work and finally non-contact team drills.

Cleveland is in a 2-0 hole in the series but will have the home court advantage Wednesday. The Cavaliers are 7-0 at home in the postseason.

OLYMPICS-US BASKETBALL

Thompson has Olympic hopes

CLEVELAND (AP) — Not even Zika worries will deter Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson from playing in the Olympics if asked.

He made it clear Tuesday he would accept any invitation that comes his way to represent USA Basketball at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Thompson and other potential Olympians in these NBA Finals acknowledged having some concerns about the Zika virus, although Warriors forward Draymond Green definitely wants to play if he's invited.

New pact for Casey

TORONTO (AP) —The Toronto Raptors and coach Dwane Casey have confirmed that they have agreed to a three-year deal through the 2018-19 season. There were no details of the amount, which was reported last week at $18 million.

Casey led the team to the Eastern Conference finals this year before losing to Cleveland. The Raptors had a franchise-record 56 wins in the regular season.

Refs want end to end-of-game reports

NEW YORK (AP) — NBA referees would like to see the elimination of the league's Last 2 Minute reports that rule if calls were correct.

The National Basketball Referees Association said in its statement Tuesday that the reports cause "more harm than good for the officials and the game." But the union says that "transparency encourages anger and hostility towards NBA officials." It said if the league won't abolish the reports, it must reform the process, questioning the credentials of those writing and editing them.

GOLF-US OPEN-WOODS

Woods out of Open

UNDATED (AP) —Tiger Woods says he is not playing at the U.S. Open next week at Oakmont as he recovers from back surgery.

This will be the third time in the last six years that injuries have kept the three-time Open champ out of the tournament. Woods said he is making progress but is not ready for competition. He has not played since a tie for 10th in the Wyndham Championship in August.

COLLEGE FOOTALL-UCLA

New deal for the coach

LOS ANGELES (AP) — UCLA football coach Jim Mora has agreed to a two-year contract extension through 2021. He is 37-16 in four seasons with the Bruins, equaling the school record for victories in that span. They have reached four consecutive bowl games while contending for a Pac-12 divisional title each year.

UNDATED (AP) — The Stanley Cup final is idle until Thursday night when Pittsburgh will have a chance to wrap up the series.

The Penguins will take a 3-1 lead onto home ice in an effort to close out San Jose.

NBA-OBIT-ROOKS

Former player and assistant dies

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Former NBA center and Philadelphia 76ers assistant coach Sean Rooks has died. He was 46.

Rooks played 12 seasons after being selected in the second round of the NBA draft by Dallas in 1992. He averaged 6.2 points in 749 games with seven teams.

Rooks spent the past two years working as an assistant on Brett Brown's staff in Philadelphia.
