Thunder rally to stun Warriors

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Oklahoma City Thunder's top two scorers combined to shoot just 33 percent on Monday, but they were good enough to lead their team to a Game 1 victory in the NBA's Western Conference finals

Russell Westbrook finished with 27 points, 12 assists, seven steals and six rebounds as the Thunder rallied to beat the Warriors 108-102 at Golden State. Westbrook hit two free throws with nine seconds left to secure the victory.

Kevin Durant scored 26 points, including a key 17-foot jumper with 30.7 seconds to play. Durant also had 10 rebounds for the Thunder, who trailed 60-47 at halftime before becoming the first road team to win at Golden State in this postseason.

Westbrook and Durant shot 17-for-51 from the field, but they didn't stop Oklahoma City from outscoring the Warriors 61-42 in the second half.

MVP Stephen Curry had 26 points and a playoff career-high 10 rebounds, but the Warriors missed too many shots down the stretch. Klay Thompson delivered 25 points, while Draymond Green added 23. Thompson scored 19 points in the first half before shooting just 3-for-10 the rest of the way.

Game 2 is Wednesday night in Oakland.

NBA-ROOKIE OF YEAR

Towns is NBA's top rookie

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The NBA Rookie of the Year award is staying in Minnesota.

Karl-Anthony Towns is a unanimous winner of the award after averaging 18.1 points, 10.7 rebounds and 1.7 blocks for the Timberwolves this season. The first pick in last year's draft is the second straight Timberwolves player to win the award, following Andrew Wiggins.

New York's Kristaps Porzingis finished second in the voting, followed by Nikola Jokic of Denver.

NBA PLAYOFFS- RAPTORS

Raptors center out for opener

TORONTO (AP) — The Toronto Raptors have announced that center Jonas Valanciunas will not play in the first game of the NBA's Eastern Conference finals Tuesday against the Cavaliers in Cleveland.

Valanciunas suffered a right ankle injury in Game 3 of the conference semis against Miami. Coach Dwane Casey says "it's going to be very difficult" for Valanciunas to play in Game 2 at Cleveland.

NBA-TRAIL BLAZERS-STOTTS

Stotts gets extension

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Terry Stotts has been rewarded after taking the Portland Trail Blazers to the Western Conference semifinals.

A person with knowledge of the negotiations says Stotts has agreed to a three-year contract extension that goes into effect following the season and runs through 2020.

The Blazers are 182-146 in four seasons under Stotts.

NBA-PACERS-MCMILLAN

New coach for Pacers

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — As expected, the Indiana Pacers have named assistant coach Nate McMillan as their new head coach. He replaces Frank Vogel, who was released after the team's first-round loss.

McMillan spent 12 seasons as the head coach in Seattle and Portland, going 478-452 in the regular season and 14-20 in the playoffs. He was hired by Vogel in 2013 and spent the past three seasons with the Pacers.

NBA-NETS-ATKINSON

Nets introduce Atkinson

NEW YORK (AP) — Kenny Atkinson has been introduced as the new Brooklyn Nets coach, nearly a month after being hired.

He was an assistant with the Atlanta Hawks and remained with them until their season ended with a second-round loss to Cleveland. He then accompanied the Nets to the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago last week.

Atkinson spent four seasons as an assistant with the Hawks and four with the New York Knicks, Before that, he was the Houston Rockets' director of player development for a year.

NBA-76ERS-AD SALES

Let the money roll in

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia 76ers have become the first team in the NBA to put a sponsorship logo on player uniforms.

The club has worked out a deal with StubHub, a website that connects ticket buyers and sellers. The logo will appear on the front left of the jersey in 2017-18 for the start of a three-year trial period.

NHL PLAYOFFS-PENGUINS/LIGHTNING

Pens square series

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Sidney Crosby has tied the NHL's Eastern Conference finals at one game apiece.

Crosby beat Andrei Vasilevskiy 40 seconds into overtime to give the Penguins a 3-2 triumph over the Tampa Bay Lightning in Pittsburgh. Crosby hadn't scored since the opening round against the New York Rangers. He took a feed from Bryan Rust at the circle and buried it for his fourth goal of the postseason.

Matt Cullen and Phil Kessel scored to put the Pens ahead 2-0 midway through the first period, but the score was tied at intermission following goals by Anton Stralman and Jonathan Drouin. Stralman was in the lineup for the first time since suffering a fractured leg in a win over the New York Islanders March 25.

Matt Murray overcame a shaky start to finish with 19 saves as Pittsburgh improved to 3-1 in overtime during the playoffs.

Vasilevskiy stopped 38 shots for the Lightning, who host Game 3 on Wednesday.

Pirates give Braves another loss

UNDATED (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates are the latest team to hammer the Atlanta Braves.

Matt Joyce was 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and three RBIs as the Bucs whipped the Braves 8-5. Josh Harrison and Francisco Cervelli each collected two RBIs in the Pirates' second straight win, while Gregory Polanco had three hits and three runs scored.

Jon Niese carried a shutout into the sixth after entering the game with a 5.63 ERA in seven starts this season. Niese was reached for two runs in six innings as the Pirates improved their home record to 8-7.

Williams Perez was tagged for six runs and nine hits in six innings for the Braves, who dropped to a major league-worst 9-28.

Elsewhere in the majors:

— Detroit coughed up an early 8-0 lead before Nick Castellanos smacked a solo homer in the seventh inning of the Tigers' 10-8 win over Minnesota. Jose Iglesias laced a three-run double and Ian Kinsler supplied a leadoff homer and an RBI double during the Tigers' eight-run first inning.

— Steve Pearce, Desmond Jennings and Curt Casali each homered and had three RBIs as Tampa Bay blasted Toronto 13-2. Tim Beckham also homered to back Drew Smyly, who struck out six and allowed one run and four hits in five innings.

— Oakland was a 3-1 winner over Texas behind Sean Manaea, who limited the Rangers to a run and four hits in 6 2/3 innings. Marcus Semien cracked a solo homer to support Manaea, who carried a two-hit shutout into the seventh inning of his first major league win.

— Jake Lamb belted a three-run homer, Paul Goldschmidt added a solo blast and Jean Segura drove in three in Arizona's 12-2 laugher over the Yankees. New York starter Chad Green was reached for six runs - four earned - and eight hits in four innings of his major league debut.

— Albert Pujols and Mike Trout combined to drive in six runs and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Dodgers 7-6 on Monday night for their fourth straight win in the opener of the Freeway Series. Matt Shoemaker (2-5) allowed three runs and six hits in five innings, struck out five and walked two. The right-hander made it past four innings for just the second time this season.

— Yan Gomes ripped a three-run homer and had four RBIs as Cleveland hammered Cincinnati 15-6. Marlon Byrd added a two-run blast, while Jason Kipnis, Francisco Lindor and Mike Napoli each had a pair of ribbies.

— Marcell Ozuna and Justin Bour hit solo homers to support Adam Conley in Miami's third straight win, 5-3 over Philadelphia. Conley held the Phillies to a run and eight hits in six innings to outpitch Jerad Eickhoff, who is winless in his last six starts.

— Boston's game tonight at Kansas City has been postponed because of rain and will be made up as part of a split doubleheader on Wednesday. Tonight's scheduled starters will take the mound Tuesday, with the Royals' Yordano Ventura against Red Sox right-hander Rick Porcello.

UNDATED (AP) — A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press that the Los Angeles Angels are close to signing two-time Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum, who has been a free agent since undergoing hip surgery. Lincecum went 7-4 with a 4.13 ERA in 15 starts last season, missing the final three months with a hip problem. He won the NL Cy Young Award in 2008 and 2009 and has made four All-Star Game appearances.

Pirates lose a player to fatherhood

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh left fielder Starling Marte has been placed on the paternity list by the club. He hit .369 on the Pirates' just-completed nine-game homestand to increase his season batting average to .326 in 36 games.

Players on paternity leave can miss up to three days.

Tigers infielder McAuliffe dies

DETROIT (AP) — The Tigers have announced that long time Detroit infielder Dick McAuliffe died Friday at the age of 76.

McAuliffe joined the Tigers as a 20-year-old in 1960, and was a fixture in the middle of the infield until 1973. He played in three straight All-Star Games from 1965-67, and led the American League with 95 runs scored in 1968.

McAuliffe finished his career with 1,530 hits, 197 home runs and 697 RBIs.

Off season transactions

UNDATED (AP) — Broncos' quarterback Mark Sanchez will miss the first few days of team workouts next week after undergoing surgery to repair a ligament in his left, non-throwing hand. Sanchez injured his left thumb in a weight room mishap on Thursday while participating in team-wide strength and conditioning work. Sanchez, a seven-year pro acquired in a trade with Philadelphia earlier this offseason, is expected to return to action the following week.

— Bills officials say first-round draft pick Shaq Lawson will have surgery on his right shoulder and wide receiver Sammy Watkins had an operation for one of his feet. A person familiar with Watkins' injury has told The Associated Press it is a small stress fracture. Watkins is expected to be ready for the start of training camp in July. The Bills say Lawson tweaked the shoulder last week and would undergo a procedure on Tuesday. No word on how long he'll be sidelined.

GOLF-TIGER WOODS

Tiger still has work to do

BETHESDA, Md. (AP) — Tiger Woods has told reporters that there is still no timetable for his return to competitive golf.

The former No. 1 player spoke at a news conference ahead of the Quicken Loans National, a tournament that he hosts.

Woods says he's getting stronger and hitting the ball better after undergoing two back surgeries last fall. But it was apparent he has a ways to go after he put three balls in the water hitting ceremonial shots on a par 3 hole.

The tournament at Congressional will be played June 23-26, the week after the U.S. Open, and it appears that Woods will attend only in a noncompetitive role.

Ex-Lakers player McMillian dies

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Former NBA forward Jim McMillian has died from complications of heart failure at a hospital in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, according to his sister-in-law Denise Sheridan. He was 68.

McMillian was selected by the Lakers with the 13th overall pick in the 1970 draft out of Columbia. He spent three years in Los Angeles, averaging 15.3 points and helping the 1971-72 Lakers reel off an NBA-record 33-game winning streak and the championship.

McMillian later played for the Buffalo Braves, New York and Portland.
