STANLEY CUP FINAL

Lightning top Hawks in Chicago

CHICAGO (AP) — Cedric Paquette has scored 15 regular-season and playoff goals during his brief NHL career. The 15th has given the Tampa Bay Lightning a 2-1 lead in the Stanley Cup finals.

Pacquette scored with 3:11 remaining to cap the Lightning's comeback in a 3-2 triumph over the Blackhawks in Chicago. Brandon Saad put the Hawks ahead 2-1 at 4:14 of the third period, but Ondrej Palat tallied 13 seconds later before Paquette gave Tampa Bay its second straight win.

Ben Bishop made 18 of his 36 saves in the first period after his status for the game was unclear just prior to the pregame warmup. The Lightning had given no indication either way about the status of their No. 1 goaltender after he left the ice twice in the third period of Saturday's 4-3 win.

Ryan Callahan scored the opening goal and assisted on the game-winner. Victor Hedman had two assists for the Lightning, who are 8-3 on the road and two wins away from their second Stanley Cup.

Brad Richards notched a power-play goal and Marian Hossa had two assists for the Blackhawks.

Game 4 is Wednesday in Chicago.

Royals catch Twins

UNDATED (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have moved back into a tie for first in the AL Central by taking the opener of their series with the division leaders.

Jason Vargas combined with three relievers on an eight-hitter as the Royals downed Minnesota 3-1. Vargas held the Twins to five hits in six shutout innings before Ryan Madson gave up Eddie Rosario's solo blast in the seventh.

Kendrys Morales put the Royals ahead to stay with a two-run shot in the second inning.

Kansas City has won two straight since a 2-8 skid. Minnesota has dropped three of its last four.

Also in the majors:

— Danny Valencia hit a two-run double and Kevin Pillar added a two-run single while Toronto scored six times in the first inning of an 11-3 laugher against Miami. Josh Donaldson added a solo homer and three RBIs as the Blue Jays earned their sixth straight victory and pulled within four games of the first-place Yankees in the AL East.

— Chris Sale was outstanding in the Chicago White Sox's 3-1 triumph against Houston, striking out 14 and giving up a run and five hits in eight innings. Avisail Garcia snapped a 1-1 tie with a two-run homer in the fourth as the White Sox dealt the AL West leaders their fifth consecutive loss.

— Troy Tulowitzki launched a three-run homer and Nolan Arenado added a two-run blast in Colorado's 11-3 pounding of St. Louis. The Rockies put together a pair of five-run innings off losing pitcher John Lackey and finished with 16 hits.

— Jimmy Rollins and Andre Ethier each socked three-run homers as the Los Angeles Dodgers ripped Arizona 9-3. Former Diamondback Mike Bolsinger carried a shutout into the sixth and allowed two runs and just three hits while fanning eight in seven innings to improve to 4-1.

— Jimmy Nelson struck out seven and limited Pittsburgh to four hits in seven innings of Milwaukee's 2-0 shutout victory. Aramis Ramirez scored the first run on Jean Segura's RBI grounder in the fifth, three innings before Ryan Braun poked an RBI single that helped the Brewers deal the Pirates just their fourth loss in 17 games.

— Matt Kemp and Alexi Amarista hit RBI doubles in the 11th inning to lift San Diego past Atlanta 5-3. Cory Spangenberg doubled home the game's first run and forced extra innings with a sacrifice fly in the ninth.

— Zack Cozart was 3-for-4 with a solo homer and an RBI double as Cincinnati beat Philadelphia 6-4. Ivan De Jesus belted a two-run homer and Mike Leake held the Phillies to two earned runs despite yielding 10 hits in six innings.

Swanson taken first overall

UNDATED (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks have used the first overall pick in the Major League baseball draft to take slugging Vanderbilt shortstop Dansby Swanson.

He is the first college shortstop to be chosen with the top selection in the draft since Brown University's Bill Almon in 1974. Swanson is hitting .348 with a .411 on-base percentage and 14 homers and 61 RBIs in 64 games for the Commodores this year after making a smooth transition from second base.

Houston took LSU's Alex Bregman with the second pick, marking the first time shortstops have gone with the first two selections since high schooler Shawon Dunston and Augie Schmidt were drafted in 1982.

Colorado also grabbed a shortstop with the No. 3 pick, taking Florida high schooler Brendan Rodgers.

— Padres manager Bud Black says right-hander Brandon Morrow felt discomfort in the shoulder during Sunday's rehab start with Double-A San Antonio. Black described the discomfort as a setback and said Morrow has returned to San Diego, where he was to have a MRI on the shoulder. Morrow was 2-0 with a 2.73 ERA in five starts before he was placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 5.

— The Phillies have signed right-hander Kevin Correia to a one-year deal and sent pitcher Severino Gonzalez to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The 34-year-old Correia had pitched for San Francisco's Triple-A team in Sacramento, going 0-1 with a 3.58 ERA before he was released last month at his request. Gonzalez was 2-2 with an 8.69 ERA in five starts for the Phils.

— The Colorado Rockies have placed reliever Rafael Betancourt on the 15-day disabled list with what the team called vertigo symptoms. Betancourt said he's been dealing with a sinus infection for the last few weeks and hasn't been able to shake it. He's struggled in his last two outings, surrendering seven runs in 1 2-3 innings.

— Astros shortstop prospect Carlos Correa made his major league debut on Monday, going 1-for-4 with an RBI single against the White Sox in Chicago. The top player selected in the 2012 draft was hitting a combined .335 with 10 homers, 21 doubles, 44 RBIs and 18 stolen bases in Triple-A and Double-A this season before the promotion.

— A woman struck by a flying bat at Fenway Park on Friday has been upgraded to fair condition. Tonya Carpenter had been listed in serious condition at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston since she was hit in the head with a bat. A family statement released by the hospital Monday also said she is responsive.

Porter signs with Chicago

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — The Chicago Bears have signed veteran cornerback Tracy Porter to a one-year contract.

Porter is joining his fourth team in as many seasons since playing his first four years in New Orleans. He is best known for his clinching 74-yard interception return touchdown for the Saints against Indianapolis in the 2010 Super Bowl.

Porter has played one season each in Denver, Oakland and Washington.

Pats cut linebacker

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — The New England Patriots released linebacker Brandon Spikes as authorities investigate whether a Mercedes he owned was involved in an accident. The Mercedes was found abandoned in a highway median near where three people were hurt in a car that was rear-ended.

While it's not clear who had been driving, the driver of Spikes' car reported hitting a deer about 3:30 a.m. through the car's OnStar on-board navigation system. The car was found with front-end damage near Patriots team headquarters.

Around the same time, troopers got a report that a car in the same area had been rear-ended by a vehicle the occupants did not see. Three people, including a 12-year-old boy, were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

30-second shot clock OK'd for men's games

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Men's basketball teams will play with a quicker shot clock and fewer timeouts next season.

It's the first time the shot clock has been trimmed since the 1993-94 season, when it went from 45 seconds to 35. Now it goes from 35 seconds to 30. Teams also will have one fewer second-half timeout, and if either team calls a timeout within 30 seconds of a media timeout, it would count as the scheduled break.

On Monday, the NCAA's Playing Rules Oversight Panel officially approved both recommendations from the basketball rules committee. The panel also approved extending the arc inside the lane from 3 feet to 4 feet in hopes of reducing collisions.

It also approved a proposal allowing women's teams to go to four 10-minute quarters instead of two 20-minute halves.

New coach for Iowa State

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State has hired Murray State's Steve Prohm as its men's basketball coach. Cyclones athletic director Jamie Pollard confirmed that Prohm will replace Fred Hoiberg, who left last week after five seasons to take over the Chicago Bulls. The 40-year-old Prohm was 104-29 in four years at Murray State. He led the Racers to 29 wins, including a 16-0 regular-season mark in the Ohio Valley Conference in 2014-15.

WOMEN'S SOCCER WORLD CUP

U.S. starts play

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — The U.S. has won the opener of its Women's World Cup schedule.

Megan Rapinoe scored twice and Christen Press provided the game-winner as the Americans beat Australia 3-1 in Winnipeg. Press put the U.S. ahead for good in the 61st minute and Rapinoe added her 31st international goal in the 78th.

U.S. star forward Alex Morgan didn't start as she continues to recover from a bone bruise in her left knee. She entered in the 79th minute, her first game action since April 11.

The United States next plays Sweden on Friday. The Swedes earned a 3-3 tie with Nigeria earlier Monday.

Convicted Olympic murder may get house arrest

JOHANNESBURG (AP) —Oscar Pistorius will be released from prison for good behavior on Aug. 21 and go under house arrest after serving just 10 months for killing his girlfriend. Acting National Commissioner of Correctional Services Zach Modise told The Associated Press. "He hasn't given us any problems."

Yet three months after he leaves prison, likely for the comfort of his uncle's mansion, the double-amputee Olympic athlete will again face the possibility of a murder conviction and could be sent back to jail, this time for a minimum of 15 years.
