Greinke, Heyward, Murphy and Zimmermann among host of players getting qualifying offers

UNDATED (AP) — Major League teams had until Friday afternoon to extend qualifying offers to pending free agents.

Players now have until next Friday to reject or accept the one-year, $15.8 million offer. Teams who extend qualifying offers to their free agents will receive a pick at the end of the first round in next year's draft should the player sign elsewhere.

With that in mind, the Dodgers have extended qualifying offers to free agents Zack Greinke, Brett Anderson and Howie Kendrick. Greinke opted out of the final three years of his contract earlier this week after going 19-3 with a major league-best 1.66 ERA this year.

The Cardinals have made qualifying offers to outfielder Jason Heyward and pitcher John Lackey, free agents who were instrumental on the NL Central title team. The Cardinals likely will try to re-sign Heyward, who hit .293 with 13 homers and 60 RBIs last season. The 37-year-old Lackey went 13-10 with a career-best 2.77 ERA. He started in Games 1 and 4 of the NL Division Series against the Chicago Cubs.

The Mets have given second baseman Daniel Murphy a qualifying offer. The 30-year-old homered in a record six straight postseason games but then hit just .150 and made key errors during the World Series loss to Kansas City. He batted .281 during the regular season with 73 RBIs and a career-best 14 homers.

The Washington Nationals have made qualifying offers to pitcher Jordan Zimmermann and shortstop Ian Desmond. Zimmermann is 70-50 with a 3.32 ERA in the majors, and Desmond has a .264 average with 110 homers and 432 RBIs.

The Angels have decided not to make a qualifying offer to third baseman David Freese, who batted .260 in his two seasons with the team. Los Angeles also declined outfielder David DeJesus' $5 million contract option.

The Chicago White Sox extended a qualifying offer to right-hander Jeff Samardzija. He struggled to an 11-13 record and a 4.96 ERA last season.

The Chicago Cubs have extended a qualifying offer to center fielder Dexter Fowler, who shook off a slow start to help the team win 97 games and reach the NL Championship Series. He hit .250 with 17 homers and finished fourth in the NL with a career-high 102 runs.

Free agent right-hander Yovani Gallardo has been extended a qualifying offer by the AL West-champion Texas Rangers. Texas did not make a qualifying offer to free agent Colby Lewis, but can still negotiate with the right-hander.

The San Diego Padres have made qualifying offers to slugger Justin Upton and right-hander Ian Kennedy. Upton led the Padres with 26 home runs and had 81 RBIs, and Kennedy was 9-15 with a 4.28 ERA.

The Orioles have extended qualifying offers to first baseman Chris Davis, catcher Matt Wieters and left-hander Wei-Yin Chen.
