Arrieta tosses 6th no-hitter of 2015... Encarnacion finishes 4-homer weekend

UNDATED (AP) — Jake Arrieta has become baseball's first 17-game winner in most emphatic fashion.

The Chicago Cubs right-hander tossed a no-hitter against the L.A. Dodgers, the second time in 10 days the Dodgers were no-hit. The Cubs won 2-0. Kris Bryant's two-run homer in the first inning produced all the scoring. Arrieta is 17-6. It's the Cubs' 14th no-hitter, and their first since Carlos Zambrano did it in 2008. Arrieta is just the third visiting pitcher to toss a no-hitter at Dodger Stadium.

Arrieta struck out a season-high 12 and walked one. His no-hitter followed one that Houston's Mike Fiers tossed against the Dodgers on Aug. 21. After Arrieta struck out the side in the ninth, he was mobbed by his Cubs teammates. The Dodgers had just two baserunners -- Kike Hernandez reached on an error in the third and Jimmy Rollins walked in the sixth.

It's the sixth no-hitter in the majors this season, and third in 18 days. San Francisco's Chris Heston, Washington's Max Scherzer, Cole Hamels then of the Phillies, Seattle's Hisashi Iwakuma and Fiers also authored no-hitters.

The Dodgers maintained their three and a-half game lead over the second-place Giants in the NL West while the Cubs lead the Giants by five and a-half games in the race for the second NL wild card.

In other baseball:

— Fans in Toronto were wondering what Edwin Encarnacion would do for an encore after hitting three home runs and driving in nine runs on Saturday. He answered with his 30th home run of the season as the Jays completed a three-game sweep of the Tigers with a 9-2 win. Mark Buehrle won his 14th game.

— The Yankees remained a game and a-half back of the Blue Jays with a lopsided 20-6 win over the Braves in Atlanta. The attack was led by Jacoby Ellsbury who hit a three-run home run and Chase Headley and Stephen Drew who each added a two-run shot. The win gave the Yankees a three-game sweep. The U.S. flag at Turner Field flew at half-staff and a moment of silence was observed before the game in memory of Gregory K. Murrey, a season ticket holder who died after falling from the upper deck to the lower-level seats Saturday.

— Matt Carpenter, Brandon Moss and Mark Reynolds all hit home runs, Yadier Molina  drove in two and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Francisco Giants 7-5. Jason Heyward added three hits and drove in a run for the NL Central-leading Cardinals, who've won seven of eight.

— Michael Cuddyer hit a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning and the NL East-leading New York Mets stopped their five-game home skid, averting a sweep by beating the Boston Red Sox with a 5-4 win. For the Sox David Ortiz lined his 494th home run, moving past Lou Gehrig and Fred McGriff for 27th place on the career list.

—Jayson Werth homered and drove in three runs as the Nationals rallied past the Marlins 7-4. Michael Taylor added two singles and scored twice for Washington, which got hits from all eight position players. Nats' starter Stephen Strasburg left the game in the fourth inning and was replaced by Doug Fister, who got the win. Jonathan Papelbon pitched around two hits in the ninth for his 22nd save. The Nationals remain 5 1-2 games behind the Mets in the NL East as they hit the road for a three-game series at St. Louis

— Brandon Guyer and Kevin Kiermaier homered for the Tampa Bay Rays in a 3-2 win over Kansas City. Xavier Cedeno got the win in relief while Brad Boxberger pitched the ninth for his 32nd save. The AL Central-leading Royals lost for only the sixth time in 23 games.

— Cleveland's Abraham Almonte hit his first career grand slam and Josh Tomlin worked into the eighth inning as the Indians completed a three-game sweep of the Angels 9-2. The win was Cleveland's fifth straight and leaves the team three games under .500.

— Ryan Braun homered and Wily Peralta pitched seven innings to lead the Brewers over Cincinnati. Peralta held the Reds to one run and seven hits in a battle of teams fighting to stay out of the National League Central cellar.

— James Shields pitched seven innings for his first road win since May in pitching San Diego to a 9-4 win over the Phillies. Shields got a lot of support as the Padres hit three home runs. The right-hander was 0-4 with a 5.63 ERA in his previous eight road starts since his last win away from Petco Park on May 24.

— Jorge De La Rosa pitched into the seventh inning before being ejected, and Ben Paulsen hit a two-run triple as the Colorado Rockies beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-0. De La Rosa and manager Walt Weiss were ejected for arguing with home plate umpire Jeff Nelson as Weiss went to the mound to remove De La Rosa from the game.

— Ervin Santana struck out 10 to earn his first home win of the season and Eduardo Nunez and Miguel Sano homered as Minnesota survived a ninth-inning rally by Houston to beat the Astros 7-5. Down 7-0 in the ninth, Chris Carter hit a three-run homer and Jose Altuve cracked a two-run shot for the Astros that made it 7-5 before Trevor May struck out Marwin Gonzalez to end the game.

— Rookie Tyler Saladino drove in the winning run with a single in the 11th inning and the Chicago White Sox rallied to beat the Seattle Mariners 6-5.

— Derek Holland struck out every Baltimore batter at least once while throwing a three-hitter for his eighth career shutout, leading the Texas Rangers over the Orioles 6-0 to complete a three-game sweep. Holland finished with 11 strikeouts.

__ Oakland erupted with three runs in the 11th inning to beat Arizona 7-4. Marcus Semien's two-run single broke the tie.

Mets land pitcher from D-Backs

NEW YORK (AP) — The National League East-leading New York Mets have bolstered their bullpen, getting right-handed reliever Addison Reed from the Arizona Diamondbacks for two minor league pitchers. The 26-year-old Reed was 2-2 with a 4.20 ERA in 38 games for Arizona this year.

Jets top pick injured slightly...Rams' Mason to sit out preseason finale

UNDATED (AP) — New York Jets rookie defensive lineman Leonard Williams, the team's first-round draft pick, has a muscle strain behind one of his knees. Williams was injured in the first half of the Jets' 28-18 preseason victory over the Giants Saturday night. The injury isn't expected to be a long-term situation.

In other NFL doings:

— Rams running back Tre Mason, the likely starter while Todd Gurley rehabs from knee surgery, has been ruled out of the preseason finale with a right hamstring injury. Coach Jeff Fisher says that Mason, the primary starter last season, probably would be questionable for the opener Sept. 13 against the Seahawks.

—Browns coach Mike Pettine says that rookie running back Duke Johnson is following the NFL's protocol on head injuries after sustaining a concussion in Saturday's win over Tampa Bay. Pettine says he doesn't know when Johnson will return and wouldn't say if former Baltimore back Ray Rice is a possibility.

— San Francisco linebacker Ahmad Brooks will not practice this coming week with the 49ers, who sent him away from the team after he was charged with misdemeanor sexual battery Wednesday.

Dixon snatches title away from Montoya

SONOMA, Calif. (AP) — Scott Dixon captured a fourth IndyCar championship by winning the season finale to snatch away the title from Juan Pablo Montoya, the Colombian sensation.

Montoya led the points from the season-opening race right until the final lap Sunday. But he finished the race in sixth, which allowed Dixon to tie him in the standings.

Dixon was awarded the title based on wins. Sonoma Raceway was his third victory, while Montoya had only two.

Montoya's day was made difficult on lap 39 when he hit Team Penske teammate Will Power. It sent him to pit lane for repairs and he was mired in the middle of the pack for the bulk of the race.

Sharapova withdraws

UNDATED (AP) — The U.S. Tennis Association says Maria Sharapova has pulled out of the U.S. Open on the eve of the tournament because of a leg injury. It's the second time in three years that the 2006 champion has withdrawn from the year's final Grand Slam event.

Sharapova has not played a match since losing to Serena Williams in the Wimbledon semifinals in July. She withdrew from hard-court tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati in August, citing a right leg strain.

EDISON, N.J. (AP) — PGA Championship winner Jason Day has continued his winning ways. The Australian finished first in the first of the FedEX playoff tournaments, The Barclays. Day shot a final round 8-under-62 to finish 19-under-par and six shots in front of Henrik Stenson.

The field will be cut to 70 for the BMW Championship in Lake Forest, Illinois, and to 30 for the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta.

The winner of the FedEx championship gets a $10 million annuity.

Maggert comes out on top

ENDICOTT, N.Y. (AP) — Jeff Maggert shot a final round 6-under-66 to win the Champions Tour Dick's Sporting Goods Open. Maggert completed play 14-under, two shots in front of Paul Goydos and four in front of David Frost, Peter Senior, Jerry Smith, Corey Pavin and Ian Woosnam.

LPGA-YOKOHAMA TIRE

Tamulis takes first

PRATVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Kris Tamulis won the LPGA's Yokohama Tire Classic for her first LPGA Tour title. She had a final round 7-under-65 to finish 17-under-par, one shot in front of Yani Tseng and Austin Ernst.

Golfer suffered collapsed lung

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Two-time major winner John Daly was back on the golf course hours after being released from a Jackson, Mississippi, hospital for what he describes as a collapsed lung. The 49-year collapsed on the 18th tee at the Deerfield Country Club. Before starting his round on Sunday Daly was seen smoking cigarettes on the patio of the clubhouse.

LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES

Japan wins

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) — The international team from Japan has won the Little League World Championship. In the title game Tokyo defeated Lewisberry, Pennsylvania, 18-11.

Tokyo won the Little League World Series by pounding out 22 hits and overcoming an eight-run first-inning deficit.

The Kitasuna Little League team, also the winner in 2001 and 2012, gave Japan its 10th title.

The international team has won five of the last six Little League World Championships.
