Kershaw fans 11 and keeps scoreless streak alive...Pirates swat Nats...Red Sox lose eighth straight

UNDATED (AP) — Clayton Kershaw was perfect for six innings and finished with a three-hitter in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 3-0 victory over the New York Mets. Kershaw fanned 11 and now has a string of 29 straight scoreless innings after his 11th career shutout. He has fanned 38 without a walk in his last three outings.

Kershaw is 8-6. He didn't allow a baserunner until Curtis Granderson's leadoff single in the seventh.

Bartolo Colon was the tough-luck loser, falling to 9-9. Colon allowed just one run on five hits in his eight innings.

In other MLB action:

— Francisco Liriano struck out 11 in six innings in pitching the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Washington Nationals 7-3 in the opener of a four-game series at PNC Park. Andrew McCutchen had two hits, including his 13th home run, a two-run shot in the eighth. Pedro Alvarez and Francisco Cervelli also went deep for the Bucs.

— In a makeup game involving teams with the best records in baseball, St. Louis held off Kansas City 4-3. Matt Carpenter and Randal Grichuk both hit two-run homers. The Cardinals maintained their six-game lead over the Pirates in the NL Central.

— Jeff Samardzija, the subject of trade rumors and perhaps pitching for the final time in a Chicago uniform, allowed one run in eight innings and Melky Cabrera homered from both sides of the plate, in the White Sox' 8-1 victory over the Cleveland Indians.

— Jacoby Elsbury drove in four runs and Chase Headley added a three-run double to pace the Yankees to a 9-3 win over Baltimore. The AL East-leading Yankees completed a three-game sweep of their divisional rivals and opened a seven game lead over the Orioles.

— Jose Altuve homered with one out in the bottom of the ninth, the last of his four hits, and the Houston Astros beat Boston 5-4. That's the eighth straight loss for the Red Sox.

— Arizona defeated Milwaukee 8-3. Zack Godley struck out seven in six shutout innings in his major league debut.

— Martin Prado scored on a Tyler Ross wild pitch to break a scoreless tie and start a four-run rally in the sixth inning to give Miami a 4-0 win over San Diego. Tom Koehler and two relievers combined on a three-hitter.

— Ervin Santana pitched eight innings of four-hit ball against his former team to lead Minnesota Twins past the L.A. Angels 3-0. Santana struck out seven and didn't issue a walk to follow up throwing 7 2/3 scoreless innings in Oakland last week. The Twins snapped a four-game skid and the Angels' seven-game winning streak. Trevor Plouffe hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning.

— Mike Zunino's RBI double in the 12th inning gave Seattle a 3-2 win over Detroit. Chris Taylor was able to score all the way from first base after outfielder Yoenis Cespedes misread the bounce off the fence.

— Russell Martin homered, doubled and drove in three runs, Josh Donaldson went deep against his former team and the Toronto Blue Jays powered past the Oakland Athletics 5-2.

— Tom Koehler threw seven strong innings, combining with relievers Steve Cishek and Mike Dunn on a three-hitter that lifted the Miami Marlins to a 4-0 win over the San Diego Padres on last night. That's the 14th shutout for San Diego, it's major league high.

— Zack Godley struck out seven in six shutout innings in his major league debut, leading the Arizona Diamondbacks to an 8-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers last night. The 25-year-old right-hander was called up from Double-A before last night's game and held the Brewers to four hits.

Bucs get Ramirez back

UNDATED (AP) — Aramis Ramirez is headed back to the Pittsburgh Pirates after they acquired the veteran third baseman from Milwaukee. The Brewers get minor league pitcher Yhonathan Barrios in return.

The trade came 12 years to the day after the Pirates sent Ramirez to the Chicago Cubs. The 37-year-old, three-time All-Star is hitting .247 with 11 home runs and 42 RBIs in what he says is his final season.

The contending Pirates were in need of infield help with regular third baseman Josh Harrison and shortstop Jordy Mercer both out at least another month with injuries.

Elsewhere:

— Oakland has shipped left-hander Scott Kazmir to his home town of Houston. In return, the A's are getting a pair of minor leaguers. Kazmir went 5-5 with a 2.38 ERA in 18 starts for Oakland this season.

— The Los Angeles Angels put third baseman David Freese on the 15-day disabled list with a broken right index finger. He suffered the injury when he was hit by a pitch Wednesday night.

NFL-BRADY

No comment from the NFL

UNDATED (AP) — The NFL players' union proposed a settlement of Tom Brady's four-game suspension to the NFL last week. A person familiar with the proposal tells The Associated Press that the offer was "met with silence." The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the offer was confidential. So far there has been no timetable on when Commissioner Roger Goodell will rule on the quarterback's appeal.

Several media reports indicated the union's proposal called for Brady paying a large fine, but with no suspension.

Brady was suspended for his role in using underinflated footballs in the Patriots' victory over the Colts in the AFC title game.

NFL-STEELERS

New deal for the coach

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers and coach Mike Tomlin have agreed to a contract extension that will keep him with the team through 2018. Tomlin is 82-46 with Pittsburgh since replacing Bill Cowher following the 2006 season. The Steelers have won one Super Bowl and appeared in another under Tomlin and are coming off an 11-5 mark and an AFC North title in 2014.

NHL-MAPLE LEAFS

Veteran Lamoriello joins Leafs

TORONTO (AP) — The Toronto Maple Leafs have hired longtime NHL executive Lou Lamoriello as general manager. Lamoriello resigned as president of the New Jersey Devils to take the job.

New Jersey won three Stanley Cups during Lamoriello's stay. The Maple Leafs fired general manager Dave Nonis after missing the playoffs for the second straight season.

NBA-TRADE

Christmas in Indy!

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Cavaliers have traded second-round pick Rakeem Christmas to the Indiana Pacers for a second-round selection in 2019.

The Cavs selected Christmas, who averaged 17.5 points and 9.1 rebound as a senior at Syracuse, with the No. 36 overall pick last month. He appeared in four summer league games for the Cavs in Las Vegas, averaging 8.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 20.9 minutes.

Pacers President Larry Bird said the team liked the 6-foot-9 Christmas when he worked out for them before the draft.

WNBA-SHOCK MOVE

Tulsa losing Shock to Dallas area

UNDATED (AP)— WNBA owners unanimously approved a plan to move the Tulsa Shock to the Dallas-Fort Worth area next season.

The Shock will finish this season in Tulsa. They will play next year at the University of Texas at Arlington, subject to approval by the Texas system's Board of Regents.

SENIOR BRITISH OPEN

Langer shares lead

BERKSHIRE, England (AP) — Defending champ Bernhard Langer is part of a crowd at the top of the leaderboard following the opening round of the Senior British Open. He's one of eight golfers that shot 5-under 65. Others in the first-place group are Jeff Sluman, Lee Janzen and Miguel Angel Jimenez.

Tom Watson and Colin Montgomerie are in a group two shots back of the leaders.

PGA-CANADIAN OPEN

Grillo sets the pace

OAKVILLE, Ontario (AP) — Argentina's Emiliano Grillo has the lead during the first round of the PGA's Canadian Open. He had an opening round 8-under-64 for a one shot lead over Vaughn Taylor and Brian Harman.

Two-time Masters champ Bubba Watson is in a group four shots back. Jason Day, coming off a tie for fourth Monday in the British Open, also opened with a 68.

LPGA-MEIJER LPGA CLASSIC

Three-way lead

BELMONT, Mich. (AP) — American's Dori Carter, Lizette Salas and Katherine Kirk share the lead after the first round of the annual Meijer LPGA Classic. Each shot a 7-under-64 for a one-shot lead over two others in the second year of the tournament. Top-ranked Inbee Park shot a 70.

SOCCER-VISA

Visa calls for independent review board

NEW YORK (AP) — FIFA sponsor Visa Inc. is calling for an independent commission to be formed to clean up world soccer's scandal-ridden governing body.

The credit card company joined fellow sponsor Coca-Cola in asking for the commission to consist of "impartial leaders" to ensure the reforms are credible.

FIFA is reeling from the indictment of 14 people — including two now-ousted vice presidents who were arrested in Zurich — in an American investigation into alleged racketeering, bribery and money laundering in soccer.

TOUR DE FRANCE

Froome remains in front

SAINT-JEAN-DE-MAURIENNE, France (AP) — France's Romain Bardet was the winner of the 18th stage of the Tour de France. The overall leader remains Britain's Chris Froome by over three minutes.
