CALEDONIA, Wis. (AP) — An elderly couple is dead after being struck by a sport utility vehicle as they left a church in southeastern Wisconsin.

Police say Oscar and Vernetta Lang, both 83 and from Caledonia, died after being struck about 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Journal Times reports the couple was leaving Mass at St. Louis Catholic Church in Caledonia, where they were longtime members, when the accident happened.

The church's pastor, the Rev. Mark Danczyk, says two nurses who were attending Mass tried life-saving efforts while paramedics were on their way.

Danczyk says he was able to administer last rites to both victims before they died. He says the church is in shock.

The SUV driver, a 32-year-old Caledonia woman, was not hurt nor were two children riding in her vehicle.
