Rochester, MN  (KROC AM News) - Twenty Olmsted County schools will join schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk and Bike to School Day Wednesday.

Students will be walking and biking to school along with parents, teachers, Mayor Brede,  RCTC football players, members of the Ice Hawks Hockey team and the Honkers’ mascot Slider.

The event will take place from 8:30 to 9:15 with kids and parents walking and biking from home to school.

Students who typically ride the bus and are not able to walk to school will be able to be active before classes start by taking part in playground activities.

The idea behind Walk to School Day is to raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of physical activity, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment.

The event is being organized by Olmsted County Statewide Health Improvement Program.
