So far this year Minnesota has avoided widespread severe weather. That was not the case recently in Iowa, where a large tornado was captured on video.

The forecast for the Rochester area calls for a sunny day with highs reaching the low 70’s throughout most of the day on Tuesday. The severe weather threat is predicted to arrive in the area by Tuesday evening.

Rochester and communities to the north, south and east are at a Level 1 risk. The National Weather Service says the two main threats posed by the potential severe weather are large hail and damaging winds.

Forecasters are also not ruling out the possibility of a tornado, but say it’s less likely to occur than the other two hazards. The timing for the potential severe weather in southeast Minnesota ranges from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.

The storm system is predicted to weaken as it moves east towards the Mississippi River.

Anyone living in the potential storm path is asked to seek shelter as the storm approaches and to have multiple ways to receive weather updates.
