Minnesota Woman Charged With $2M Life Insurance Scam

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Federal prosecutors have charged a Minnesota woman with defrauding an insurance company of $2 million in her ex-husband's staged death.

Fifty-year-old Irina Vorotinov of Plymouth and her 25-year-old son, Alkon, who is accused of concealing the scheme, appeared Tuesday in U.S. District Court.

According to the complaint, Igor Vorotinov bought a life insurance policy from Mutual of Omaha in April 2010 and listed Irina and Alkon as beneficiaries.

In October 2011, police in Moldova were called about a body. Irina identified the body as her former husband, then returned to Minnesota and filed a death claim.

But according to court documents, Alkon was stopped in Detroit in 2013, and photos on his computer showed Igor was still alive.
