Winona, MN (KROC-AM News) - The man charged with the murder of Maddi Kingsbury last year appeared in court today for the first day of what is scheduled to be a three-day hearing for reviewing and challenging the evidence against him.

30-year-old Adam Fravel previously filed motions in Winona County Court seeking to dismiss the charges and suppress statements he gave to investigators after the 27-year-old Winona woman disappeared in late March of last year. The hearing will also be used by the judge assigned to the case to hear arguments concerning Fravel's request to move his trial away from Winona County due to the large amount of publicity and news coverage of the case.

Additionally, a motion was filed today that requests a "Restrictive Order" that would prevent public access to any audio/ video statements made by Fravel to law enforcement that "may be offered as exhibits by either party during the course of the pretrial evidentiary hearing." Specifically, the motion identifies statements that were made by Fravel during meetings with investigators on March 31, April 1, and April 2, 2023.

Kingsbury was last seen alive on the morning of March 31 when she and Fravel dropped their children off at daycare. She was scheduled to work that day at her Mayo Clinic job in Rochester but never showed up. After months of intensive searches, her body was discovered in some brush near a gravel road just north of Mabel in Fillmore County, near the home of Fravel's parents.

The criminal complaint says Fravel told investigators his relationship with Kingsbury was coming to an end and that they were preparing to move out of their residence in Winona. The court document says he also indicated that Maddi told him that she had started seeing someone else about two weeks before her disappearance, and that she was looking for an apartment for herself and her children.
