Mayo Civic Center Could be Under New Management Next Year
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The organization that oversees the operation of the Mayo Civic Center is apparently keeping its options open concerning the contract for managing the city-owned downtown Rochester convention and entertainment complex.
Experience Rochester, which was formerly known as the Rochester Convention and Visitors Bureau, is contracted to oversee the operations of the Mayo Civic Center through the end of 2027 and recently issued a request for proposals from parties interested in managing and operating the facility, along with providing food and beverage services. The current five-year contract, which is held by ASM Global based in Los Angeles, is set to expire at the end of the year.
Experience Rochester, when it issued the request for proposals late last month, indicated that ASM Global and its food and vendor services partner were encouraged to submit proposals, along with any other interested entities. City Administrator Alison Zelms says the Experience Rochester Board of Directors also wants to evaluate the current services and consider if they could be more directly provided by the local organization.
As part of the process, representatives of interested companies and other entities have been invited to a pre-proposal tour of the Mayo Civic Center complex on Thursday. The deadline to submit proposals is June 11, and Experience Rochester is planning to select a winner on July 3rd.
That would be followed by negotiations on the actual contract starting in mid-July. The plan calls for beginning the transition to the new contract, possibly with a new operator, on September 1.
Under the current contract, ASM Global, receives approximately $4 million a year from the city to operate and maintain the Mayo Civic Center. The new contract will run for another five years, and provide Experience Rochester two, five-year options, to renew the agreement.
