ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — St. Paul police say a man fatally shot by officers had a loaded handgun "within immediate reach."

Police say 24-year-old Marcus Golden of St Paul was shot as he drove his SUV directly toward an officer Wednesday after police responded to a woman's complaint about receiving threatening text messages.

Police say the officers, "fearing for their lives," fired several times, striking Golden.

Investigators searched the vehicle and found a loaded gun, but police say it remains under investigation whether the gun had been fired.

The officers are identified as seven-year veteran Jeremy Doverspike and Dan Peck, who has been with the department nearly two years. Neither was hurt. Both are on standard three-day administrative leave.
