Additional Information

Anyone 18+ is invited to take part in a hands-on workshop featuring Kolam, an art practice traditional to homes throughout South Asia.

Participants in this free workshop will learn about the ancient art form and create their own designs, which start from a simple grid of dots, on both paper and with rice flour on the floor of the Sunken Room at Chatfield Center for the Arts. Kolam is an intricate pattern made using rice flour that is typically created each morning on the doorstep of a South Indian home by the women that live there. Kolams become food for ants and birds, following the concept of living in harmony with creatures around you that they may bless you and bring prosperity to the home.

Admission to this special outreach activity is free thanks in part to grant funding thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts & cultural heritage fund. To support the continuation of community concerts at Chatfield Center for the Arts, we hope attendees consider a suggested donation of $10-15 which can be given at the door or when registering online.

Workshop will take place in the Sunken Room at Chatfield Center for the Arts. Space is limited to 40 participants. Workshop is anticipated to last 60 minutes.
