Seahawks let defense do the talking

SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks' offense was sluggish on Monday, but their defense was outstanding in a 13-10 win over Detroit on Monday.

The Lions were poised to take the lead with under two minutes left when Kam Chancellor punched the ball free from Detroit wide receiver Calvin Johnson at the Seattle 1 to secure the Seahawks' second straight win since an 0-2 start. The ball bounded into the end zone and went over the back line for a touchback, snuffing out the Lions' potential 91-yard TD drive.

Before the late Detroit drive, the Seahawks had allowed just 166 total yards and 10 first downs. The Lions finished with only 53 rushing yards on 18 carries, while Matthew Stafford threw for 203 yards on 35 attempts.

Russell Wilson was sacked six times and somehow eluded several others while throwing for 235 yards. Seattle's lone TD was Wilson's 24-yard pass to Doug Baldwin with 10:56 left in the half.

The Lions are 0-4 for the first time since 2010.

NFL-DOLPHINS-PHILBIN

1-3 Dolphins make change

MIAMI (AP) — Don Shula was head coach of the Miami Dolphins for 26 years before he retired after the 1995 season. Dan Campbell has become the Dolphins' ninth coach in the 20 years since Shula left.

Campbell is the interim coach after serving as tight ends coach. He replaces Joe Philbin, who was fired on Monday after three-plus seasons and a 24-28 record. The dismissal follows Sunday's 27-14 loss to the New York Jets dropped the Dolphins to 1-3. They haven't won since their season opener.

Miami never finished better than 8-8 in their three full seasons under Philbin. The Dolphins are on course to miss the playoffs for the 13th time in the past 14 years, and the seventh season in a row. It has been 23 years since they reached the AFC championship game.

Campbell has been with the Dolphins since 2010.

NFL-COLTS-LUCK

No luck in learning Luck's status

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indianapolis Colts continue to be vague when discussing quarterback Andrew Luck's status for Thursday night's game at Houston.

Luck missed his first NFL game Sunday because of an injured right shoulder. He went through a very light practice on Monday and was able to lob two short screen passes during the portion open to the media. While coach Chuck Pagano said Luck looked a lot better than he did on Saturday, the team is listing Luck's status as day to day.

Backup quarterback Matt Hasselbeck was 30 of 47 with 282 yards and one touchdown in Sunday's 16-13 overtime win over Jacksonville.

NFL-INJURIES

Jags put Linder on IR

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The Jacksonville Jaguars have placed right guard Brandon Linder on injured reserve with a shoulder injury.

The team says Linder will have surgery later this week to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder. The second-year starter injured his shoulder in practice two weeks ago and aggravated it in a win against Miami on Sept. 27.

MLB-NATIONALS-WILLIAMS

Nats fire skipper

WASHINGTON (AP) — It didn't take long for the Washington Nationals to begin their housecleaning following a disappointing season.

The Nationals have fired manager Matt Williams and his coaching staff after a season in which the team went from World Series favorite to failing to make the playoffs. The move comes one day after the Nats finished second in the National League East at 83-79, seven games behind the division-winning New York Mets.

Williams spent just two years at the helm after replacing Davey Johnson. Williams was voted NL Manager of the Year in 2014 after guiding Washington to the NL's best record. The team's showing last year prompted the Nationals to exercise his 2016 contract option and led to high expectations. But the Nats never got more than 10 games over .500, and they eventually saw a 4 ½-game lead become a 9 ½-game deficit within 69 days.

Williams was 179-145 at the helm.

MLB-YANKEES-SABATHIA

Sabathia in rehab, to miss postseason

UNDATED (AP) — The New York Yankees' playoff roster won't include CC Sabathia.

The lefty starter will miss the postseason after checking into an alcohol rehab center. The 2007 AL Cy Young Award winner said he took the step to receive the care he needs and become a better person.

Sabathia helped the Yankees win the 2009 World Series, going 19-8 during the regular season and winning 21 games the following year. Injuries have contributed to his diminished numbers over the past three seasons.

Sabathia was 6-10 with a 4.73 ERA this year after posting a 5.28 earned run average in just eight starts for the 2014 Yanks.

— Billy Eppler has been introduced as the Angels' new general manager, bringing the Southern California native back home after 11 years in the Yankees' front office. The former UConn pitcher moved up from a scouting position to GM Brian Cashman's valued assistant during his time in the Bronx. Angels owner Arte Moreno also confirmed that Mike Scioscia will return for his 17th season next year, the longest tenure among current big league managers.

— The Oakland Athletics have promoted David Forst to general manager and kicked Billy Beane up to executive vice president of baseball operations. Forst just completed his 16th year with the low-budget franchise and 12th as assistant GM. Beane and Forst have regularly split up their duties in such a way that Forst has better relationships with some agents and opposing GMs.

— MLB said it managed to cut six minutes from the average time of a nine-inning game this season, when it adopted some speedup rules. STATS said Monday that the season average ended at 2 hours, 56 minutes. While the average dropped to 2:53 in the first half of the season, it was back at 3:00 after the All-Star break.

NBA-WALK OBIT

PHOENIX (AP) — Former NBA center Neal Walk has died at 67.

Phoenix drafted Walk in 1969 after losing the coin flip with Milwaukee to draft Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He averaged 20.2 points and 12.4 rebounds for the 1972-73 Suns and later played for the New Orleans Jazz and New York Knicks.

Walk had health problems over the years and his condition deteriorated in recent weeks. He underwent surgery 28 years ago to remove a tumor on his spine, an operation that left him unable to use his legs.

NHL-TORRES

Sharks forward hit with half-season suspension

UNDATED (AP) — San Jose Sharks forward Raffi Torres will miss half the upcoming NHL season and lose more than $440,000 in salary after being suspended by the league for a hit on Ducks forward Jakob Silfverberg.

The league said the 41-game suspension without pay was for interference and an illegal check to the head against Silfverberg during the first period of a preseason game in Anaheim on Saturday.

— Veteran defenseman Mike Weaver has retired at 37 after 11 NHL seasons. Undrafted out of Michigan State, Weaver played for the Thrashers, Kings, Canucks, Blues and Panthers before spending the last two seasons with the Canadiens. Weaver retires after scoring eight goals and 97 points in 633 NHL games.

— Newly-acquired Canadiens forward Zack Kassian has entered a substance abuse program after being involved in a motor vehicle accident Sunday morning. He is suspended without pay until he is cleared for on-ice competition by the program administrators. Kassian broke his nose and left foot in the crash in Montreal. Two women with him in the vehicle also sustained non-life threatening injuries.

SOCCER-FIFA INVESTIGATION

Swiss nix FIFA official's request to leave prison

ZURICH (AP) — A Swiss court has rejected an attempt by one of the imprisoned FIFA officials to be released on bail for medical reasons.

The Federal Criminal Court didn't name the official. Six men remain in custody in Switzerland after being arrested in May on American charges while in Zurich for the FIFA Congress.
