Day 12-Williams ousted

NEW YORK (AP) — Roberta Vinci said she had booked a flight home for Saturday, the day of the U.S. Open women's final. She had to rebook that trip after pulling off one of the greatest shockers in Grand Slam history.

The unseeded Vinci has prevented Serena Williams from completing a calendar Grand Slam by pulling out a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory in the semifinals. Williams served up 16 aces but was done in by 40 unforced errors, twice as many as Vinci. Williams had won 33 straight Grand Slam matches in capturing the last four major titles.

Williams was trying to become the first player since Steffi Graf in 1988 to win all four Grand Slam events in the same year. The 43rd-ranked Vinci had never won a set off the 21-time major champion in four previous meetings and was in her first career Grand Slam semifinal at age 32.

The outcome sets up an all-Italian final between Vinci and Flavia Pennetta, who upset second seed Simona Halep 6-1, 6-3.

Sunday's men's final will include top seed Novak Djokovic, who needed just 85 minutes to knock out defending champion Marin Cilic, 6-0, 6-1, 6-2. The nine-time Grand Slam champion dropped just 11 points in the first set and improved to 14-0 all-time against Cilic.

Also reaching the men's final is 34-year-old Roger Federer, who saved all four break points he faced in a 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 rout of No. 5 Stan Wawrinka. The second-seeded Federer still hasn't dropped a set in the tournament after winning 80 percent of his first serve points and limited himself to only 17 unforced errors.

The 17-time Grand Slam winner is seeking his first major title in more than three years and his first U.S. Open crown since 2009.

Jered Weaver worked six innings and blanked the Astros until Carlos Gomez smacked a two-run homer in the sixth.

— Pittsburgh is four games behind the NL Central-leading Cardinals after the Redbirds and Reds had their game suspended by rain with the score tied 2-2 in the top of the eighth. — Washington was a 2-1 loser at Miami as J.T. Realmuto led off the seventh with a double and scored the tiebreaking run on a sacrifice fly by Miguel Rojas. NL batting leader Bryce Harper struck out three times and stranded five runners as the Nationals lost their fourth straight since a five-game winning streak.

Yanks lose Teixeira for season

UNDATED (AP) — The New York Yankees' bid to overtake the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East race just got a little tougher.

Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira will miss the rest of the season after tests revealed he has a fractured right leg. Teixeira fouled a ball off his shin Aug. 17 and has started only once since. Rookie Greg Bird will continue to start in place of Teixeira, who hit .255 with 31 home runs and 79 RBIs this year.

Elsewhere in the majors:

— Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto has appealed his two-game suspension for his home plate tantrum during Wednesday's game at Pittsburgh. Votto said he didn't deserve to be ejected from the game let alone earn a suspension. He said he politely asked for timeout, using the word "please" three times, but umpire Tim Welke  twice said no before tossing him from the game, causing Votto to erupt in anger.

— The Houston Astros have lost starter Scott Feldman for the rest of the season with a sprained right shoulder. He left his Sept. 1 start against Seattle in the third inning with shoulder discomfort and had hoped to return after missing a start. However after an MRI on Thursday general manager Jeff Luhnow decided Feldman would be shut down for the year.

NFL clears Pats in headset malfunction

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — The NFL says the New England Patriots had nothing to do with audio interference that rendered the Pittsburgh Steelers coaching headsets useless during the first quarter on opening night.

Spokesman Michael Signora says the league believes it's entirely attributable to an electrical issue that was made worse by inclement weather.

After the Steelers' 28-21 loss, coach Mike Tomlin said communication problems are "always the case" when playing in New England. The Steelers didn't plan to file a formal complaint.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick said he had problems with his headsets, too. And he said "it's just not right" that his team is repeatedly being accused of cheating.
