Jays power past Baltimore

UNDATED (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays have carried a 1 ½-game division lead into Labor Day. Not bad for a club that was under .500 on July 28.

The AL East leaders got homers from Troy Tulowitzki, Jose Bautista and Kevin Pillar in a 10-4 rout of Baltimore. Bautista's 33rd homer of the season was a two-run blast that put the Blue Jays ahead 3-0 in the first inning. Tulowitzki also smacked a two-run shot and Josh Donaldson collected his major league-leading 113th and 114th RBIs.

The outcome makes the Jays the first team since the 2004 Astros to move 20 games over .500 after falling below .500 following the All-Star break.

The second-place Yankees kept pace by belting homers on consecutive pitches in the sixth inning to erase a 3-0 deficit in a 6-4 triumph over Tampa Bay. Brian McCann tied it with a three-run blast before Alex Rodriguez sent David Archer's next pitch over the wall. Archer carried a one-hitter into the sixth inning before the Yankees rallied to take the rubber match of the three-game set.

The Rays remain 4 ½ games out of a playoff berth.

Cal Ripken celebrated the 20th anniversary of breaking Lou Gehrig's record for consecutive games by announcing the Yankees-Rays game for TBS.

Elsewhere in the majors:

— Houston trailed 3-0 until Jed Lowrie belted a grand slam in the seventh inning of the Astros' 8-5 triumph over Minnesota. Dallas Keuchel is 17-6 after allowing three runs and five hits while striking out 12 in eight innings. The Astros increased their lead in the AL West to three games over Texas and kept the Twins 1 ½ games behind the Rangers for the final AL wild-card slot.

— The Rangers were 7-0 losers to the Angels, allowing Los Angeles to climb within 2 ½ games of the final AL wild-card berth. Hector Santiago walked six but allowed just one hit before the Angels' bullpen gave up just one hit over the last three innings. Mike Trout hit a solo homer and had two RBIs, while Taylor Featherston delivered three hits and two ribbies for the Halos.

— The White Sox beat the Royals 7-5 to become the first road team to earn a sweep in Kansas City this season. Adam Eaton is hitting .517 in his last seven games after going 3-for-5 with a solo homer and three runs scored. Jose Abreu and Avisail Garcia drove in two runs apiece as Chicago prevented the Royals from padding their 12-game lead in the AL Central.

— Pittsburgh is back within 5 ½ games of the NL Central lead after Gerrit Cole held the first-place Cardinals to two hits in seven shutout innings to lead the Pirates' 7-1 win at St. Louis. Cole also delivered an RBI single for the Bucs, who led just 2-0 until Aramis Ramirez, Sean Rodriguez and Starling Marte homered in the last two innings. Cole is 16-8 after helping the Pirates take the rubber match of the three-game set.

— Martin Prado beat the Mets for the second time in three days, lifting a sacrifice fly in the ninth to give Miami a 4-3 comeback win over Tyler Clippard and New York. Clippard had never allowed a run in 15 career appearances in Miami until Justin Bour (bohr) tied the game with a solo homer with two out in the eighth. The Mets took a 3-2 lead on a two-run homer by Wilmer Flores in the sixth before their lead in the NL East was trimmed to four games over Washington.

— The Nationals completed a three-game sweep as Jayson Werth launched a three-run homer while the Nats built an 8-2 lead in an 8-4 romp over Atlanta. Bryce Harper and Anthony Rendon also went deep for the Nationals, who got 4 2/3 innings of shutout relief after Joe Ross faltered. The Braves have their first 12-game losing streak in 27 years.

— A.J. Ellis singled home the tiebreaking run and Brett Anderson pitched into the sixth inning of the Dodgers' 5-1 win at San Diego. The Dodgers padded their lead by scoring three times on pitcher Nick Vincent's throwing error in the seventh inning. Anderson gave up a run and four hits over 5 2/3s as Los Angeles maintained its 7 ½-game edge over the Giants in the NL West.

— Matt Duffy laced a two-run triple and Brandon Crawford added a two-run double while San Francisco scored five times in the fifth inning of a 7-4 comeback at Colorado. Buster Posey tied the game 2-2 with a solo homer in the fourth before the Giants won their second straight since a seven-game skid. Madison Bumgarner was shaky in his 17th win, yielding four runs and nine hits in six innings.

— Miguel Montero hit a grand slam and Kris Bryant smacked a 495-foot home run as the Chicago Cubs beat Arizona 6-4 to complete a three-game sweep. Bryant tied the game in the fifth with the longest homer of the major league season before Montero and pinch-hitter Jonathan Herrera added round-trippers in the sixth to make it 6-1. The Cubs are a National League-best 26-10 since July 29th, giving them an eight-game lead over the Giants for the second NL wild-card berth.

— Jay Bruce homered and drove in three runs to help Cincinnati avoid a sweep with a 6-3 win over Milwaukee. Brandon Phillips also homered and had three hits as the Reds halted the Brewers' six-game winning streak.

— Cody Anderson threw seven innings of two-hit ball in Cleveland's 4-0 win over Detroit. Francisco Lindor snapped a scoreless tie with a two-run triple in the sixth, helping the Indians win for the eighth time in 11 games.

— Boston beat Philadelphia 6-2 as David Ortiz smacked his 497th career home run and 200th at Fenway Park. Ortiz finished with three RBIs and Eduardo Rodriguez allowed one run in seven innings to help the Red Sox complete a three-game sweep.

— Ketel Marte poked an RBI single to spark a three-run fifth in Seattle's 3-2 verdict over Oakland. Hisashi Iwakuma held the A's to a run and five hits in 6 1/3 innings to help the Mariners win their fourth in a row and climb within 6 ½ games of an AL wild-card berth.

Harvey says he'll be available for playoffs

MIAMI (AP) — Matt Harvey now insists he will pitch in the postseason if the New York Mets get there.

He wrote on "The Players' Tribune" that he is communicating with his doctor, agent Scott Boras and the Mets to come up with a plan that makes him available in October. The right-hander is in his first season back from Tommy John surgery and says he understands the risks of going beyond 180 innings this year. He currently is at 166 1/3 innings.

Serena, Venus to meet in quarters

NEW YORK (AP) — Serena and Venus Williams will face off in a family affair for the 27th time in their professional lives.

The sisters will meet in the quarterfinals of the US Open after top-seeded Serena beat Madison Keys 6-3, 6-3 and Venus took out Estonia's Anitt Kontaveit 6-2, 6-1.

Serena holds a 15-11 advantage in the series. She's won six of the last seven meeting with her older sister, including a fourth round match at Wimbledon this year.

Roberta Vinci advanced when Canadian Eugenie Bouchard had to withdraw from their fourth round match with a concussion. She fell and hit her head in the locker room earlier this week.

The highest seed to fall yesterday was women's No. 13 Ekatarina Makarova, who was knocked out by Kristina Mladenovic, 7-6, 4-6, 6-1.

Top seed Novak Djokovic was a winner in the night session, knocking out Roberto Bautista Agut, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. That puts Djokovic in a Grand Slam quarterfinals for the 26th consecutive time.

Defending champ Marin Cilic is through to the quarters after serving 23 aces in a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6, 6-1 win over Jeremy Chardy. No. 18 Feliciano Lopez and No. 19 Jo-Wilfred Tsonga also advanced to the quarterfinals.

T25-NOTRE DAME-FOLSTON OUT

Irish lose Folston for season

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly says running back Tarean Folston is out for the season after tearing a ligament in his right knee Saturday's 38-3 victory over Texas.

Folston tore his medial collateral ligament and will have surgery later this week.

The 5-foot-9, 214-pound junior led the Irish in rushing last season with 889 yards on 175 carries and was expected to get even more chances this season as the only experienced back.

Edwards wins at Darlington

DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) — Carl Edwards picked up his second victory of the season by holding off Denny Hamlin at Darlington Raceway.

Edwards took the lead on the last pit stop and outdueled Hamlin on a restart eight laps from the end for his first Southern 500 victory. Edwards was two laps behind early in the long, long, nearly five-hour NASCAR Sprint Cup race, slowed by a record 18 cautions.

Pole-sitter Brad Keselowski was second, followed by Hamlin, Joey Logano and defending race champion Kevin Harvick.

FORMULA ONE-ITALIAN GRAND PRIX

Hamilton continues to dominate

MONZA, Italy (AP) — Lewis Hamilton cruised to his seventh win of the season at the Italian Grand Prix. The victory helped Hamilton double his Formula One lead over Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg, whose engine caught fire with two laps remaining.

Hamilton finished 25 seconds ahead of Sebastian Vettel (VEH'-tehl), while Felipe Massa wound up third.

Hamilton now leads Rosberg by 53 points with seven races remaining this season.

GOLF-DEUTSCHE BANK CHAMPIONSHIP

Stenson grabs lead

NORTON, Mass. (AP) — Henrik Stenson is the leader through three rounds of the PGA's Deutsche Bank Championship, the second event in the Fed-Ex playoffs.

Stenson erased a five-shot deficit in seven holes before signing off on a 6-under 65 that leaves him 13-under for the tournament and one stroke ahead of Rickie Fowler.

Sean O'Hair and Matt Jones are two strokes back.

Second-round leader Charley Hoffman had five bogeys in a seven-hole stretch en route to a 76 that puts him six shots off the pace.
