The annual Butt Kickers campaign to rid downtown Rochester of cigarette butts collected 28,179 spent cigarettes this year, surpassing last year’s record of over 26,000 cigarette butts. The John Adams Middle School students participating in the program went out last Friday and scoured the downtown area for the messy smoking materials.

Over the past five years, the John Adams Butt Kickers have picked up almost 122,500 cigarette butts while conducting one day sweeps of the downtown in the spring in an effort to spread the message that cigarette butts are litter.

The annual campaign is sponsored by Mayor Ardell Brede, the Rochester Downtown Alliance, and the Rochester Parks and Recreation Department. First Transit provided transportation for the students free of charge.
