2015 Shipping Season Ends on Upper Mississippi
St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers is marking the end of the 2015 shipping season on the upper Mississippi River.
Officials say the river tow Charlie G left St. Paul on Thursday and passed through Lock and Dam 2 near Hastings pushing 12 barges.
Traditionally, the passage of the final toll heading south through the lock is considered the end of the navigation season on the portion of the Mississippi River administered by the St. Paul District of the Corps of Engineers.
The season began March 25th when the river tow New Dawn reached St. Paul. In between, the Corps of Engineers estimates 96.7 million tons of commodities were shipped on the river in this region. The running 10-year average is about 93 million tons.
Last year, the end of the shipping season was marked on November 30th.
