Woman Promoting a Korean War Memorial to Visit Rochester
Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - How’s this for timing? The woman who founded an organization that honors Korean War veterans and has traveled around the world in an effort to remember those who served the “Forgotten War” is scheduled to make an appearance in Rochester this week.
Hannah Y. Kim has also been promoting peace on the Korean Peninsula - which will be the focus of an expected summit between President Trump and North Korea’s leader.
Kim is currently on a tour that will take her to 70 cities in all 50 states to visit Korean War Memorials. Her tour will end July 27th, which is National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day. She has been officially appointed as Goodwill Ambassador of the Korean War Veterans Memorial Foundation.
The goal of her tour is to “raise awareness about the Wall of Remembrance” for Korean War veterans. The planned addition to the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C was approved by Congress in 2016, but a lack of funding has delayed construction.
While she was a 24-year-old graduate student in Washington in 2008, Kim established Remember727, an organization dedicated to honoring veterans and promoting peace. She lobbied Congress to enact legislation and it was signed by President Obama in 2009. It established July 27 as National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day.
Kim is scheduled to visit the Soldiers Field Veterans Memorial in Rochester this Thursday. She will take part in a special program at the memorial and present a memorial wreath. The Korea Veterans Memorial Service is scheduled to begin at 11:00 AM and it’s open to the public.
