UPDATE: Sanders Says 3 Victories Are Fueling a Comeback

WASHINGTON (AP) — New York and five other Northeastern states holding presidential contests next month could be the key to Bernie Sanders hopes of catching up to Hillary Clinton in the Democratic presidential race.

Sanders, who needs to make up a big delegate deficit, got a psychological boost with three caucus wins yesterday in Hawaii, Alaska and Washington state, all of which Clinton had virtually conceded beforehand. Sanders says he can do well next month in the more liberal states coming up.

In an interview with the AP last night, Sanders also said that his campaign is increasing its outreach to the party insiders, called superdelegates, who can pick either candidate and are overwhelmingly with Clinton.

The three wins underscore some persistent Clinton vulnerabilities, particularly with young voters and liberal activists.
