ALEXANDRIA, Minn. (AP) — A 50-year old man has died and his 2 ½-year old grandson is hospitalized after their ATV went through the ice of Lake Andrew near Alexandria in western Minnesota.

The Douglas County sheriff's office says 50-year-old James Minnerath died after being airlifted to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale.

The Star Tribune's reports Minnerath's grandson is in critical condition at Children's Hospital of Minneapolis.

Authorities got a call Tuesday that the two were overdue. The caller went out looking for them and spotted a hole in the ice and said it appeared the ATV broke though.

Divers pulled both victims from the water. The two were flown to hospitals in the Twin Cities.

Minnerath had been celebrating his 50th birthday and riding the ATV on the lake with his grandson.
