Jordan Murphy had 19 points and 17 rebounds for the Gophers (5-3) for his second straight double-double, tying the game on a tip-in with 1 second left in regulation, but he later fouled out. Nate Mason, Minnesota's sophomore point guard, had 11 points but four turnovers without an assist.

Casey Kasperbauer led the Coyotes (5-3) with 17 points, making four free throws in the final 10 seconds to seal the biggest win for the program in seven years playing Division 1.

Eric Robertson, one of four Minnesota natives on the South Dakota roster, hit the tying baseline jumper with 7 seconds left in the first overtime and finished with 16 points.

Shy McClelland made a layup off a slick spin dribble in the lane to make it 45-37, and with 11:58 remaining the Coyotes had their biggest advantage at 50-40 after the third 3-pointer of the afternoon by Kasperbauer off a rebound that Charles Buggs couldn't control for the home team.

The Gophers had a surge left in them, though, with 10 straight points to forge a tie. Startlingly similar to his game-saving maneuver that followed 70 seconds later, Murphy tipped in a miss with 1:11 remaining to make it 57-all.

Buggs threw a bad pass on the next Gophers possession that Robertson stole. McClelland was fouled on the other end before making both of his free throws for a two-point edge. Mason forced an off-balance, one-handed runner that bounced off the backboard, but Murphy was in perfect position for the tying tip-in.

Mason swished a 3-pointer early in the first overtime and Kevin Dorsey hit one too for a 67-61 lead, but the Coyotes snapped right back. Dorsey committed the costly turnover, a 5-second call while closely guarded on the wing, and Robertson answered on the other end to force the second extra session.

Mason hit another tying 3-pointer with 2:36 left, but with the Gophers trailing by one after Burnette's first basket of the second half Mason launched another long one with 11 seconds remaining when they could have played for the last shot.

Minnesota defeated South Dakota in all 13 previous contests on the court, but this was the first meeting since 1985 and only the second since 1967.
