St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Minnesota State Patrol and over 300 local law enforcement agencies will have extra officers on patrol looking for seat belt law violations beginning Monday morning.

The statewide “Click It or Ticket” campaign will run through June 5th to coincide with the busy Memorial Day Holiday travel period.

Officials with the Minnesota Department of Public Safety note the state has a high compliance rate, with a survey conducted last year showing 94-percent of front seat occupants were buckled up, but there is room for improvement.

Crash statistics clearly show the benefits of using seatbelts. In 1987, almost 4200 people suffered severe injuries in crashes in Minnesota. The total last year was 745 and experts credit the use of seatbelts for much of that improvement.
