Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - The Minnesota Department of Transportation is considering installing a second roundabout in the Eyota area.

MNDOT Public Affairs Coordinator Mike Dougherty appeared with Andy Brownell Wednesday morning for his regular "MNDOT Mike" segment on KROC-AM's Rochester Today Show and mentioned the possibility of another roundabout at another notorious intersection in eastern Olmsted County. Dougherty says the discussions are in the early stages and whether a roundabout is installed at the junction of Highway 42 and County Road 9 is largely contingent on the availability of funding.

The intersection, which is only about two miles north of the new roundabout at the junction of Highway 14 and Highway 42, has been the site of numerous fatal and serious injury crashes over the years, including a deadly collision involving a dump truck in June.

The possibility of using a roundabout to address safety issues at the intersection came during a discussion about the process used by MNDOT in the aftermath of fatal or serious injury crashes. Dougherty says MNDOT engineers, law enforcement personnel, local officials and others involved in the state's Toward Zero Deaths initiatives will meet and review every of the crash to determine what occurred and if there are any changes or other steps that could be taken to prevent future tragedies.
