Rochester Today: Supt. Munoz Discusses Possible Referendum

The Superintendent of the Rochester School District covered a smorgasbord of issues during his monthly appearance with Tracy McCray and Andy Brownell for the Rochester Today show on KROC-AM.

One of the topics discussed Wednesday was a recent survey of 400 school district residents who were contacted in an effort to gauge support for a possible operating levy referendum later this year. Superintendent Michael Munoz says the process of conducting the survey has been completed, but the consultant hired for the work is still processing the responses and a full report will be brought to the School Board at a future date. If the survey found support in the community for extending and slightly increasing a levy that is scheduled to expire in the near future, Munoz says he expects the School Board to order another survey in the spring before making a decision about whether to put a referendum before voters. That decision would have to be made in August, if the vote was to take place this November.

The superintendent also talked about the deployment of several thousand iPads in about a half dozen Rochester schools this week. The School Board approved the purchase of the tablet computers last year as the school district continues to implement the One to One Technology initiative but began a few years ago at Longfellow Elementary School.
