There has been a lot of talk lately about separating children from their families, and the damage it does (or doesn't do, depending on the source). I thought it'd be a good idea to talk to someone that works with kids dealing with trauma to find out more.

On KROC-AM, I invited Matt McCay (MSW, LICSW, and Clinical Program Director at Family Service Rochester) in to talk about what I felt couldn't be as simple as politicians were making it out to be. But, I didn't want it to be political. Just information so it can be heard and not attacked by those that might disagree. I hope you'll click "play" and listen in that frame-of-mind.

The short answer? There is no short answer. Each child responds individually to situations.

Though the topic is heartbreaking, the conversation isn't, because it sees the probelms and poses solutions. It is a conversation about the reality of childhood trauma, disconnection, and the counseling that exists to pro-actively help kids thrive in very difficult circumstances.

I do hope hearing what goes on in a child will help some be less likely to say, "I feel bad for the kids, but..." Try saying what I do. "I feel bad for the kids." Full stop.
