Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The distribution of the medication that counteracts the effects of an opioid overdose helped save the lives of two people in the Rochester area.

A spokesman for the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Department says a 20-year-old woman was revived after a deputy administered two doses of Narcan last night. The deputy was responding to a report of a heroin overdose at Chester Woods Park shortly after 9 PM.

A Rochester police officer used the medication a few hours later to save the life of a 29-year-old man. Spokesman Captain John Sherwin says the officer rushed to a home in the 2300 block of Haling Court Northwest around 2:20 a.m. after family members discovered the unresponsive man. He was revived after a single dose of Narcan and was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital for evaluation.

After arriving at the hospital, the man told police that was his third overdose in as many days.

Captain Sherwin says the department only recently received training for administering Narcan and he believes it was the first time the medication has been used by Rochester police.
