Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - A Rochester man is among those scheduled to be presented with the Purple Heart Medal during a ceremony at Fort Hood later this week.

A statement issued by the military base says 47 medals will be awarded Friday morning to the service-members and civilians wounded in a mass shooting at the base in Texas in 2009, including retired Staff Sergeant Patrick Ziegler of Rochester.

He was the most seriously wounded survivor of the shooting rampage and moved to Rochester a few years ago. His wife, Jessica, is a Rochester native and Ziegler made repeated trips to the city to receive treatment for his injuries at the Mayo Clinic.

The Defense Department announced in February that the members of the military that were victims of the Fort Hood attack had been approved to receive the Purple Heart, while the civilian victims would receive the Medal for the Defense of Freedom.

The man responsible for the tragedy, Major Nidal Hasan was convicted in 2013 and was sentenced to death, although his case is under appeal.
