St. Paul, MN (Learfield Wire Services) - Republican lawmakers are joining Governor Mark Dayton in challenging a federal judge’s ruling that the state’s Sex Offender Treatment Program is unconstitutional.

House Majority Leader Joyce Peppin says “The program is constitutional. We are in agreement about that and we hope that the court will see it our way.”

The judge ordered the state to release sex offenders who no longer meet legal criteria to be held for treatment after they’ve completed their prison sentences. Dayton then promised an appeal, saying his top priority is making sure Minnesotans are safe.
