Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) -  The Rochester City Council voted 6-0 Monday evening to award the contract for the Rec/Senior Center project to the Krause Anderson Construction Company following a lengthy discussion about the project during the Council’s Committee meeting in the afternoon.

Much of the discussion involved the higher than anticipated cost of the $22 million project, which will require an additional $1-million dollars in funding from the city to cover contingency and other expenses.

Staff recommended tapping a reserve fund for capital projects, but the Council decided to hold-off on making a decision on the source of the additional money to allow for additional discussion about other potential funding options.

The action taken by the Council will allow the project to proceed, and work on expanding and upgrading the existing Rec Center and constructing an adjacent Senior Center is expected to get underway next month. The project is scheduled to be completed in the fall of next year.
