Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) -  It wasn’t all that much but the snow Rochester received Wednesday was enough to set two records.

The 4 inches recorded at the airport broke a record that stood for nearly 80 years. The previous daily snowfall record for April 18th was 2 inches, set in 1939. It also raised the monthly total to 17 inches - a new record for the month of April. The previous record of 16.4 inches was set in 1983.

Wait, there’s more.

The high temperature recorded at the airport Wednesday was 31 degrees, nearly 30 degrees below normal.  It was also a record - the coldest high temperature for April 18th. Every day this month has had a daily average temperature that is below normal and several cold high records have been broken. The average monthly temperature through April 18th is 26.4 degrees, nearly 18 degrees below normal. Unless it really warms up over the next week or so, this month will be among the coldest Aprils on record for the Rochester area.

The heaviest snow from Wednesday’s storm fell in Fillmore, Houston and Mower counties where totals were in excess of 10 inches. The total from the town of LeRoy in Mower County was 12 inches. There are also reports of more than a foot in parts of northeast Iowa.

Dry and warmer weather is expected into next week.
