Preliminary numbers show Minnesota saw a 7-percent decline in fire-related deaths last year.

A new report from the State Fire Marshal’s office shows there were 41 fire-related fatalities in the state in 2014. That continued the state's long-term trend of fewer fire deaths that began over 30 years ago.

The highest fire-related death toll on record occurred in 1976 when 154 people perished. The lowest was 35 fatalities in 2009.

Officials stress the 2014 numbers are preliminary and could rise in coming months.
