Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Olmsted County property owners will see a new charge on their tax bill next year.

The Olmsted County Board Tuesday approved a new property tax levy that will be used to fund new housing initiatives.

The board voted to levy $1.35 million, which is just over half of the amount allowed under state law. About a fourth of the amount will be used to cover the annual operational deficit of the county’s Housing and Redevelopment Authority. The rest will be used to help pay for housing programs, including rehabilitation projects.

Olmsted County Community Services Director Paul Fleissner says the goal of the county’s new initiative is to jumpstart other funding plans.

The Greater Minnesota Housing Fund has been working with county officials and others in developing a strategy to deal with local challenges. A proposal has a goal of 1500 new homes and 500 refurbished houses by 2020. Money for the homes would come from the HRA, employers, existing government funds and charity.
