Olmsted Board Contributes $400k to Lake Zumbro Project – And No More
Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - The Olmsted County Board Tuesday narrowly approved a financial contribution to help pay for the Lake Zumbro restoration project - but also passed another motion that prohibits any more funding.
The board’s authorization of $400,000 also requires a fourth of the money be set aside for any possible legal and assessment challenges. Commissioners Bier, Flynn and Podulke were in the minority on the funding vote. But they were joined by Commissioner Brown in approving the second motion, which was offered by Bier.
The board had been asked to contribute nearly $1 million. The project’s current cost is $7 million. The state has agreed to contribute half the cost as long as local funds cover the balance. The board was told earlier that RPU has agreed to pay a third of the local cost and Wabasha County has indicated it will contribute $100,000. Property owners who are part of the Lake Improvement District will be assessed the rest.
An engineering study will be needed before dredging can begin.
