Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Rochester Fire Department responded to an industrial site early today because of a report of a hazardous materials spill.

The incident was reported just before 2:30 AM at the Kerry Bioscience plant in the 2400 block of 7th Street Northwest. The company staff at the site informed the firefighters there had been a spill of 100 to 200 gallons of nitric acid solution. The corrosive liquid had pooled in an exterior courtyard on the west side of the building.

Fire Department Captain Brett Knapp says it was soon determined the spill did not present any danger to the public because it was contained in the courtyard and was not flowing toward any public property or drainage systems. It was also cold enough the solution or starting to freeze, which minimized any potential problems associated with fumes.

The Fire Department cordoned off the area around the spill while the company arranged to have a private contractor clean up the site.
